ODA International Interdisciplinary Research Projects 2024

Graduate ProgramProminent ScholarshipResearch ProgramSlide Friday, 25 August 2023

The British Academy is inviting proposals from UK-based early career researchers working with international partners wishing to develop interdisciplinary projects involving both the humanities and social sciences.

Aims

The purpose of each project will be to develop new international interdisciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences that is ODA-eligible. Research may be problem-focused, creatively innovative and exploratory, and should bring together relevant disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, where appropriate, for maximum impact/effect. The Academy requires all applications to fundamentally involve and integrate both the humanities and social sciences. The Academy particularly encourages applications led from the humanities.

The aim of this call is to support international collaborations between early career researchers in the UK and early career researchers in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or Least Developed Countries on internationally focused ODA-eligible research projects of an interdisciplinary nature involving the humanities and social sciences. Other than this framing of international interdisciplinary research led by early career researchers that is ODA-eligible, the research itself can be focused on any issue or topic. There are no themes to this call other than the research must be ODA-eligible. It is open to any research focus if it meets the international interdisciplinary nature as set out here and is ODA-eligible.

International Science Partnerships Fund

This call is supported from the UK’s International Science Partnerships Fund managed by the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology. This funding is focused on enabling UK-based early career researchers to work with early career researchers in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or Least Developed Countries. In the context of this call, funding from the International Science Partnerships Fund is funded by Official Development Assistance (ODA), therefore applications for this funding must be ODA-eligible.

Eligibility requirements

The Principal Investigator must be an early career researcher from either the humanities and social sciences and be based at an eligible UK university or research institute.  The PI must be of postdoctoral status or above (or have equivalent research experience). For this award, we consider an early career researcher to be within seven years of obtaining their PhD, excluding any career breaks. The involvement of at least one ECR Co-Applicant based in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or Least Developed Countries is also required.  The British Academy requires projects to involve and integrate both the humanities and social sciences.

Only research that has a primary objective which is directly and primarily relevant to the problems of developing countries may be counted as ODA. We will require applicants to demonstrate that the proposal is ODA-eligible.

Value and duration

The British Academy is offering awards of up to £300,000 for 24 months in duration with Full Economic Costing at 80%. Projects must begin in March/April 2024 and finish in March/April 2026.

Application process

Applications for the ODA International Interdisciplinary Research Projects 2024 programme must be submitted online using the British Academy’s Grant Management System (GMS), Flexi-Grant®.

The deadline for submissions and UK institutional approval is 1 November 2023, 17:00 (GMT).  For further information on this scheme, including full eligibility requirements, please click here.
