Being able to use English in everyday life is an important skill to have in the modern era. Not only helping us gain more insight and knowledge, but English helps us to communicate with other people around the world.
Universitas Muhammadiyah Gombong (UNIMUGO) is aware of this matter, and want their students to be able to practice their English skills. In order to do so, they invited three international students from UGM to help local students from the Nursing and Midwifery Study Programs practice their English skills, especially in speaking.
Held on July 8th 2024 in UNIMUGO campus on Gombong, Kebumen, Central Java, the class was designed as a roleplay activity between UGM international students and UNIMUGO students. The international students pretended to be patients, while the UNIMUGO students performed some basic medical check-ups like checking blood pressure and body temperature and conversed with them in English.
After the class had concluded, the international students had an opportunity to explore local tourism spots in Kebumen, such as Goa Dempok (Dempok Cave) and Sagara View, a hill that overlooked a nearby beach.
In short, both local and international students gained a lot from this activity. For example, UNIMUGO students got to practice their English speaking skills, particularly in the medical field. The experience could be beneficial because as future healthcare professionals, they will be required to interact with a lot of people, including foreigners that might need their help.
On the other side, UGM international students got to engage with local communities and gain insights about other universities in Indonesia. They also got to explore new places in Indonesia, which will enrich their experience while studying here.
