Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) recently conducted an institutional visit to Taiwan on May 4–8, 2026, as part of its ongoing efforts to initiate and strengthen strategic partnerships with leading universities and institutions in Taiwan. The visit is also a response to the invitation sent by the Ministry of Education Taiwan, supported by the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO).
Led by the Rector of UGM Prof. Ova Emilia, the delegation visited several prominent Taiwanese universities, including National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Feng Chia University, Tatung University, National Chung Hsing University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Ming Chi University of Technology, National Chengchi University, and National Tsing Hua University.
Most of the universities visited already maintain established collaborations with UGM and are internationally recognized among Taiwan’s leading higher education institutions. According to the QS World University Rankings 2026, National Tsing Hua University (ranked #176) and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (ranked #199) are ranked among Taiwan’s top universities, particularly in engineering and computer science. Meanwhile, National Chengchi University (ranked #=604) is recognized for its strengths in social sciences, business, and international relations, and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (ranked #=345) is known for its excellence in applied science and industrial collaboration.
UGM sought not only to reaffirm existing partnerships through the visit, but also to explore broader opportunities for collaboration in areas such as student mobility, joint research, academic exchange, dual degree programs, industry partnerships, and technological innovation.
During the meetings, representatives from both sides exchanged ideas on strengthening internationalization and creating more impactful collaborations that can benefit students, researchers, and academic communities in both countries. The discussions also highlighted the growing importance of Indonesia–Taiwan cooperation in higher education, particularly in science, technology, engineering, business, and innovation-related fields.
UGM itself has maintained long-term partnerships with Taiwanese institutions since 2006. As of today, UGM collaborates with 36 universities, 7 companies, 5 organizations, and 2 hospitals across Taiwan. Strengthening this relationship further, UGM established the Taiwan Center at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in 2022, which serves as an information and service center for students interested in pursuing study opportunities in Taiwan.
Through this visit, UGM reaffirmed its commitment to expanding global engagement and building sustainable international partnerships. The strengthened collaboration with Taiwanese universities is expected to open wider opportunities for academic exchange, research cooperation, and innovation that contribute to the advancement of higher education in both Indonesia and Taiwan.
