Greetings from Hong Kong!

Established in 2009 by the Research Grants Council, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD programmes in Hong Kong’s universities. The Fellowship Scheme will provide a competitive annual stipend and conference and research-related travel allowance per year up to three years

We are pleased to inform you that the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong is launching the Seventeenth Round of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (the “Scheme”) for 2026/27 academic year intake.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in the following eight universities, irrespective of their country of origin, prior work experience and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply.
  1. City University of Hong Kong
  2. Hong Kong Baptist University
  3. Lingnan University
  4. The Chinese University of Hong Kong
  5. The Education University of Hong Kong
  6. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
  7. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
  8. The University of Hong Kong
  • Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

 

FELLOWSHIP AWARD

  • The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$340,800 (approximately US$43,690) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$14,200 (approximately US$1,820) per year for each awardee for a period up to three years. 400 PhD Fellowships will be awarded in the 2026/27 academic year*. For awardees who need more than three years to complete the PhD degree, additional support may be provided by the chosen universities. SELECTION CRITERIA

While candidates’ academic excellence is of primary consideration, the Selection Panels will take into account factors as follows:

  • Academic excellence;
  • Research ability and potential;
  • Communication and interpersonal skills; and
  • Leadership abilities.

 

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • Depends on each universities requirements.

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  1. Apply directly to Research Grants Council. Kindly refer to Application Guide Website.
  2. The deadline is 01 December 2025, 12:00 [Hong Kong Time.
  3. The FINAL decision is from Research Grants Council.

 

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • In the meantime, the students are required to keep the hard file of all documents until further notice by the Office of International Affairs.
  • In case the faculty could not provide the letter of enrollment and nomination during this period, the official nomination through email from the faculty is acceptable. The official nomination could be delivered to head-oia@ugm.ac.id (cc to scholarship@ugm.ac.id)
