In an effort towards broadening partnerships with international institutions, Imperial College London visited Universitas Gadjah Mada on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025. The visit aimed to explore potential areas of collaboration between the two institutions through aligned UK and Indonesia research priorities, such as health systems strengthening, sustainable mining and the use of data and AI for disaster risk reduction.
ICL was represented by Professor Helena Legido-Quigley, Chair in Health Systems Science; Dr. Yves Plancherel, Lecturer in Climate Change and the Environment; Francesca Skillicorn, Partnerships and Programmes Manager; Michael Reilly, Strategic Research Development Manager; and Alex Page, Head of Strategic Projects, Senior Partnerships Manager Asia.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by representatives from UGM’s Faculty of Geography, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Faculty of Engineering. Representatives from UGM’s Directorate of Research also participated in the discussions.
The meeting focused on expanding the existing partnerships between UGM and ICL. Notable proposals include strengthening existing collaborations with Singapore through the INSPIRASI program and developing it further with ICL, initiating a joint project at master’s level with an emphasis on industry engagement, and exploring opportunities for joint academic supervision.
Following the visit, ICL plans to set up further discussions with their academics department to develop potential collaborations between UGM and ICL.
This collaboration not only reinforces the global commitment to tackling shared challenges in health, sustainability, and disaster resilience, but also strengthens academic and institutional ties between the UK and Indonesia, paving the way for impactful, interdisciplinary research and educational exchange.
