The Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with the ASEAN University Network (AUN), recently hosted the AUN Summer Camp 2025 from July 23 to August 3, 2025.

During the online opening session held on July 23, representatives from the Faculty of Engineering emphasized the importance of global collaboration in facing environmental challenges and strengthening academic collaboration between ASEAN countries and the world. In addition, Lisendra Marbelia, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., the Head Committee of AUN Summer Camp 2025, expressed her appreciation for all the participants in this program.

The event was designed as a hybrid program which combines both online and on-site activities, and reflected a shared commitment to addressing regional and global sustainability challenges through academic collaboration and youth engagement. Aside from class lectures, the participants also had the opportunity to learn and experience things first-hand from local communities, ranging from river management to chocolate-making process.

Coming from countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Brunei Darussalam, Philippines, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Yemen, and Pakistan, the participants took part in a wide range of activities, including interactive lectures, campus tours, field work, and cultural exposure, offering both academic insight and experiential learning.

UGM Students Explore Sustainability and Renewable Energy in INSPIRASI-NTU Summer Program 2025

HighlightsNewsSlide Tuesday, 5 August 2025

A group of 15 students from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) took part in the INSPIRASI-NTU Summer Program 2025, held from July 2 to 19 in collaboration with Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya.

The short program provided students from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) backgrounds with an immersive learning experience across two countries, combining academic insight with practical application. The program’s key themes included sustainability, smart cities, renewable energy, and circular economy, in which the participants explored how cutting-edge technologies and innovative policies contribute to sustainable urban development.

Following the academic portion in Singapore for the first two weeks, students continued their journey in Surabaya, Indonesia, where they had the opportunity to apply their knowledge through site visits, collaborative projects, and interactive sessions at ITS that allowed them to apply their knowledge within the local context.

Beyond the classroom, the program also offered cultural excursions and city tours that enriched the students’ cross-cultural understanding. From exploring the urban landscape of Singapore to engaging with local communities in Surabaya, students experienced how culture, policy, and innovation intersect in shaping sustainable futures.

“As the name implies, this program was truly inspiring,” said Rivera Fransiska Manik, a participant from UGM who is currently studying in the Faculty of Agriculture. “Not only gave new insights, but it motivated me to develop ideas and projects that promote sustainability in Indonesia,” she added.

INSPIRASI, short for Indonesia-NTU Singapore Institute of Research for Sustainability and Innovation, is a consortium between NTU and 4 universities in Indonesia: UGM, Universitas Indonesia (UI), ITS, and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), focusing on sustainable development on the three main pillars of renewable energy, circular economy, and smart cities.

Through this program, UGM students not only deepened their academic understanding of sustainability and renewable energy, but also built meaningful networks with peers from other universities and gained global perspectives that will benefit their future careers.

AIESEC in UGM Celebrates Cultural Diversity in Global Village 2025

HighlightsNewsSlide Tuesday, 5 August 2025

AIESEC in UGM in collaboration with the Office of International Affairs (OIA) UGM recently hosted Global Village 2025 at Wisma Kagama on Saturday, July 26, 2025.

Bringing the theme Cultural Carousel: Wandering the Global Wanders, this was the second Global Village in 2025 after previously being held in February. It is a cultural festival aimed at introducing the rich diversity of cultures around the world, including Indonesia.

“With this year’s theme, we invite the participants to not only act as a visitor to our event, but also as someone who contributes to making cultural understanding a reality,” explained Franzeska Aurellia, the organizing committee president of Global Village 2025.

The event featured three main activities: cultural booths, country parade, and artistic performances by both Indonesian and international students. Aside from Indonesia, several other countries participated in this year’s event, including Vietnam, Sri Lanka, China, USA, Timor Leste, and Nigeria.

At their respective booths, the international students showcased their various cultural elements from their home countries, ranging from traditional food to interactive mini-games. In addition to managing their booths, some students also had the opportunity to perform on stage, presenting traditional songs and dances.

The lively and interactive atmosphere was reflected in the enthusiasm from the visitors. They moved from booth to booth, engaging with international students, sampling traditional food, and trying out mini-games.

“I made a booth displaying American cultures, and made grilled cheese for visitors to enjoy,” said Crystal Wiyono, UGM exchange student from the USA who participated in the event. “It was really fun. I’m happy that everyone gets to enjoy different cultures here, and many students were interested in my booth!” she concluded.
