Department of French Language and Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences Universitas Gadjah Mada proudly present Summer Course 2026: Translation and Interpretation in Global Relations.

Collaborating with L’Institut francais d’Indonesie (IFI), Universiti Putra Malaysia, National University of Laos, and Universiti Malaya, this program aims to explore the field of translation and interpretation to constitute a strategic academic field that bridges language, culture, and diplomacy while strengthening Universitas Gadjah Mada’s international profile.

Translation and interpretation between French and Indonesian play a crucial role in developing linguistic proficiency and intercultural competence among students of French Language and Literature. Despite growing claims that technology will replace translators, human mediation remains essential, as translation involves cultural sensitivity, nuance, and aesthetic judgment beyond machine capability. Interpretation, in particular, relies on real-time human interaction and remains indispensable in diplomatic and international contexts. For students, these skills enhance analytical ability and open pathways to careers in diplomacy, cultural institutions, and global industries.
