Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL), Timor-Leste, have strengthened their academic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at UGM’s Central Office Building on Monday, September 14, 2026, with delegations from both universities in attendance.
Representing UGM, Vice Rector for Education and Learning, Prof. Dr. Wening Udasmoro, S.S., M.Hum., DEA., welcomed the UNTL delegation and highlighted the potential for closer academic ties between Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
“We see great opportunities to further develop student exchange, joint research, and academic resource sharing between UGM and UNTL. We hope these efforts will bring our two universities closer and create more opportunities for our academic communities,” she stated.
UGM currently has around 45 students from Timor-Leste, a number that reflects the growing academic connection between the two countries. Prof. Wening further explained that UGM continues to welcome international students, particularly those who wish to pursue master’s and doctoral studies. She also introduced UGM’s plan for a library-sharing system with universities across Southeast Asia. The system will provide partner institutions with wider access to scholarly publications produced by lecturers.
“Through greater access to academic publications, we hope to facilitate knowledge exchange and create new possibilities for our partner universities to work together,” she explained.
UNTL Rector Prof. Dr. Joviano António da Costa, M.Eng., expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to work with UGM and learn from its academic community. He emphasized the importance of human resource development at UNTL, particularly through opportunities for academic staff to pursue further study and professional development at UGM.
“It is a great honor for us to work together and learn from UGM. We hope this relationship will continue to grow and provide opportunities for our staff to learn, develop their capacities, and build stronger academic connections,” he said.
Prof. Joviano also spoke about the importance of a long-term relationship between the two institutions. He expressed hope that the partnership would continue and lead to meaningful academic engagement between UGM and UNTL.
“We hope this partnership can lead to lasting academic relations that benefit our institutions and communities, while also contributing to the development of higher education in Timor-Leste,” he concluded.
