Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) recently welcomed representatives from the Jardine Foundation on Friday, 30 January 2026, to discuss the expansion of scholarship opportunities for postgraduate study and to strengthen the long-standing partnership between the two institutions.

The Jardine Foundation is an educational trust established by Jardine Matheson in 1982 to mark the company’s 150th anniversary. Founded in China in 1832, Jardine Matheson is a diversified investment group with a strong focus on the Asian region. Through the Jardine Foundation, the group supports high-potential students across Asia to pursue their education at leading universities.

Leading the UGM representatives, Rector Prof. Ova Emilia expressed her gratitude and appreciation for Jardine Foundation’s continued support for the UGM academic community, including students, alumni, and faculty members. Since 2015, around 17 postgraduate students from UGM have pursued their studies at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge through the Jardine Foundation Scholarship. In addition, approximately 40 undergraduate students received Jardine scholarships between 2022 and 2025.

Anthony Nightingale, director of Matheson & Co Ltd. and Commissioner of Astra International, highlighted that Indonesia and China are the primary focus countries of the scholarship program. “We aim to provide equal opportunities for students to attend prestigious universities,” he added.

Building on the positive outcomes of the existing collaboration, UGM, through its Directorate of Partnerships and Global Relations, proposed expanding the scholarship scheme to include Master’s and Doctoral programs conducted at UGM. This initiative is expected to further enhance UGM’s international academic ecosystem and broaden access to high-quality postgraduate education.

The visit concluded with a meeting with Jardine alumni at UGM’s Gelanggang Inovasi dan Kreativitas Mahasiswa (GIK), providing a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the impact of the scholarship program and to strengthen the growing Jardine-UGM community.

Through this continued collaboration, UGM and the Jardine Foundation reaffirm their shared commitment to nurturing future leaders and advancing higher education in Indonesia and across the region.
