To better prepare aspiring doctoral candidates for their academic journey, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in collaboration with the University of Groningen host a Pre-Doctoral Training Course for PhD student candidates in UGM Main Building, running from May 5th to 9th, 2025.

Led by Georgette Coffeng, a specialist in intercultural communication and research skills, and John Falvey, International Policy Advisor at the University Services, International Strategy and Relations, both from the University of Groningen, this intensive five-day program is designed to equip participants with the essential academic and intercultural skills necessary to kick-start their international PhD journey successfully.

The first day kicked off with introductions and orientation, allowing participants to meet the instructors and gain an overview of the course structure. The atmosphere was warm and engaging, as students shared their motivations and expectations for the training.

Over the course of the program, the participants will dive into interactive workshops covering skills necessary for their Doctoral studies, from academic presentation, intercultural communication, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and handling culture shock in the Netherlands. In addition to interactive workshops and group work, this course also includes 1-on-1 coaching with the instructors, aiming to give in-depth information for each participant which is tailored to their personal needs.

On the second day, the course will feature an alumni networking evening where participants can engage with previous UG PhD students and hear firsthand about their experiences studying in the Netherlands. This session aims to offer practical insights for the PhD candidates.

The course will conclude with pitch sessions, where each participant presents an individual 5-minute pitch about their research fields and receives feedback from the instructors. The exercise serves as both a demonstration of the skills learned and rehearsal for future academic presentations and networking events.

This collaborative training course by UGM and University of Groningen highlights a strong partnership between Indonesian and European academic institutions, signaling a push toward global academic integration and cross-cultural learning.
