
University of Galway, Ireland visited Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on Friday, May 2nd 2025, marking a significant move towards initiating collaboration between the two universities.
The visit was focused on exploring potential implementations of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two universities, particularly in the fields of business, health science, medicine, geography, and engineering. The MoU itself was just officially signed on 28 April 2025.
The University of Galway was represented by Ms. Catherine Maria King, Head of Global Partnerships, Global Galway; Dr. Emer Curtis, Associate Professor of Accountancy and Finance, Associate Head of Internationalisation, J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics, College of Business Public Policy and Law; Dr. Alanna Stanley, Lecturer in Anatomy and Radiology, School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences; Dr. Marcus Keane, Lecturer, School of Engineering Director of Internationalisation, College of Science and Engineering; and Gari Soedarjo, representative from Noble Solutions.
The delegation of the University of Galway were warmly welcomed by Prof. Dr. Puji Astuti, S.Si., M.Sc., Apt., Director of Partnerships and Global Relations UGM. Along with Prof. Puji, the meeting was also joined by representatives from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Geography, and Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing.
Some key proposals discussed during the meeting included the interest in establishing double degree programs in Master’s and Doctorate levels and opportunities for collaboration in student exchange and summer course programs. There was also interest in joint research initiatives, particularly focusing on sustainability.
Following the visit, University of Galway will engage in further meetings and discussions with relevant colleagues, particularly those specializing in sustainability. Meanwhile, UGM will map out potential collaborative efforts between the two universities.
In a symbolic gesture to celebrate the newly forged partnership, the University of Galway will plant a tree in Terryland Forest Park, Galway. The tree will not only help enhance biodiversity and improve air quality in Galway, Ireland, but also serve as a lasting symbol of the growing collaboration between University of Galway and UGM.
With the shared commitment to reach excellence in education, research, and sustainability, the partnership will hopefully lead to a meaningful impact on both academic and global communities.
