A total of 24 students from SD Model Sleman had the opportunity to practice English with 8 international students from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at the Office of International Affairs UGM.
Coming from the 4th and 5th grades, the students were divided into 4 small groups of 6 students. Each group then visited 4 different stations, with 2 international students stationed at every one of them.
At every station, the students engaged in 15-minute conversations with the international students, discussing topics such as self-introduction and culture. Afterwards, the groups rotated to the next station, giving them the opportunity to speak with all the international students involved in the event.
The enthusiasm of the students in practicing English was clearly evident throughout the event. They learned how to introduce themselves, asked many questions to the international students, and heard fascinating stories about the cultures of the countries their international peers came from.
This visit is part of SD Model’s regular activities to support learning at the Model’s English Conversation Club (MECC), an extracurricular English program at the school. Through direct practice with international students, the students are expected to gain more confidence in speaking English.
Not only did the students enjoy the event, but the international students from UGM also expressed their joy in participating. One of them, Maxime Karimoen, an international student from the Netherlands studying at the Faculty of Law, said, “I really enjoyed the event. The kids were super kind and excited to practice their English. I would definitely love to visit them again!”
Similarly, Jawad Khan, an international student from Pakistan studying at the Faculty of Biology, also shared his appreciation for the event. “It was great to see how confidently and enthusiastically the students participated and expressed themselves in English,” he said. “Their efforts and improvement truly reflect their dedication to learning and growing in the language.”
