Japanese Language and Culture Program at Kanazawa University

Program Outline
Name of the Program: Japanese Language and Culture Program, Kanazawa University
Unique aspects of the course
This program aims to provide students from overseas with an opportunity to improve their proficiency in Japanese language and to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and society. It is a one year program conducted solely in Japanese.
Number of Students to be accepted : 15
(Embassy nominees:5、University nominees:10)
Qualifications and Requirements for Application
Applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
(1) Applicants must have sufficient Japanese language ability to converse, read and write basic Japanese (a level equal to that of Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level N2).
(2) Applicants should be majoring in a field relevant to Japanese language or culture in their home university.
(3) Applicants must be a junior or a senior student at their home university.
(4) Applicants should be prepared to devote themselves to studies of this program throughout the year. Enthusiasm regarding research work and class participation is a must.
4 Aim of the Course Students should strive to master their field of research and have an aptitude in Japanese equivalent to N1 at the completion of their stay.
5 Course Duration
From October 1, 2016 to August 31, 2017 (including the independent research period)
Semesters :
October – February (Autumn Semester)
April – July (Spring Semester)
Oral Presentation Practice and Report Writing Period :
August 1 – August 31
6 Outline of Courses Offered (length of 1 course = 15 weeks, length of one lecture = 90minutes)
◇ Accommodation
Students will stay in one of the two accommodation facilities given below.
1) Kanazawa University International House  Located within the campus, accommodating international students and researchers studying at Kanazawa University (only single rooms are available).
Rent and Utility fees : Approx. ¥30,000
2) Kanazawa University Student/International Student Dormitory “SAKIGAKE” Located within the campus, accommodating international students and researchers studying at Kanazawa University (only single rooms areavailable).
Rent and Utility fees : Approx. ¥30,000
1 Qualifications
1) Institution:
Applicants must be enrolled in an institution (a university, a faculty or a school) having an exchange agreement with Kanazawa University.
2) Nationality:
Applicants must be a national of a country with which Japanese government has diplomatic relations. An applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application is not eligible. However, persons with dual nationality who hold Japanese nationality and whose place of residence at the time of application is outside of Japan are eligible to apply as long as they choose the nationality of the foreign country and give up their Japanese nationality by the date of their arrival in Japan. Applicant screening will be conducted at the Japanese diplomatic mission in the country of applicant’s nationality.
3) Age:
Applicants generally must have been born between April 2, 1986, and April 1, 1998.
4) Academic Background:
Applicants must be enrolled in an institution mentioned above 1) as undergraduate students (junior or senior) majoring in Japanese language or Japanese culture at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan.
Those majoring in fields of study other than Japanese language and Japanese culture and who wish to pursue complementary studies in Japanese language and culture should apply to other programs such as Program A (KUSEP) in the next term.
5) Language:
A level equal to that of Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level N2 is required.
6) Health:
Applicants should be certified to be healthy by a qualified and recognized physician.
7) Arrival in Japan:
Scholarship recipients must arrive in Japan in late September, 2016.
8) Applicants are required to acquire a “College Student” visa when they come to Japan.
9) Others:
Scholarship recipients shall immediately return to their home country and resume their studies at their school after the end of the period for the provision of the scholarship. After returning to the home country, former scholarship recipients shall maintain close contact with the university where they studied, cooperate with the conducting of post-return survey questionnaires, participate in events conducted by Japanese diplomatic
missions in their country, and work to improve relations between the home country and Japan.
10) Any applicant who meets any or all of the following conditions is ineligible. If identified after the start of the scholarship period, the applicant will be required to withdraw from the scholarship.
a) Those who are military personnel or military civilian employees at the time of their arrival in Japan;
b) Those who have received a Japanese Government Scholarship (Monbukagakusho scholarship) in the past;
c) Those who are currently enrolled at a Japanese university with a College Student (ryugaku) residence status; those enrolled, or scheduled to be enrolled, at a Japanese university as a privately financed international student during the period when the scholarship application was filed in the home country until prior to the start of the provision of the scholarship; However, even if the applicant is currently a privately financed international student studying in Japan, this restriction does not apply to an applicant who will certainly finish the current course before the start of the designated course at the Japanese university and will return to the home country;
d) Recipients of scholarships from institutions other than MEXT (including government institutions in their home countries) that overlap with the Japanese Government Scholarship (Prospective beneficiaries are included);
e) Recipients who make a double application for this scholarship to other universities, other embassy recommendations, and the Student Exchange Support Program provided by Japan Student Services
Organization(JASSO);
f) Those who have studied the Japanese language at a university for a total period of less than one year as of April 2016. Those who have studied Japanese for a total of at least one year at another university should submit without fail documents (transcript of grades at other university, etc.) that can verify that the applicant studied Japanese for a period of at least one year at the said university;
g) Holders of dual nationality at the time of application who cannot verify that they will give up Japanese nationality by the time of the arrival in Japan.
2 Scholarship Benefits
1) Monthly Allowance: 117,000 yen
The scholarship will be paid to each recipient from October 2016 to August 2017. The scholarship is cancelled in principle if the recipient is absent from the university for an extended period.
2) Travel allowance:
round-trip air ticket to and from Japan
(Scholarship recipients must depart from and return to the country of their nationality. The return ticket will be given to only those who will leave Japan until the end of August, 2017.)
3) Tuition fees: to be waived
3 Application Procedure (for Program B and Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship)
Applicants must submit the following documents to Kanazawa University through their home institution. All the documents must be written in either Japanese or English, or accompanied by a translation in Japanese.
1) Application for Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship (Before filling in, please print two pages on one sheet, i.e. p.1 on one side and p.2 on the other side / p.3 on one side and p.4 on the other side. Please fill it out as much as possible in Japanese.)
2) Essay: Written by the applicant in only Japanese (about 800~1000 letters) with the theme “The most remarkable Japanese social phenomenon”.「最も注目すべき日本社会の現象」
3) Photographs (4 clear copies (4.5×3.5cm); upper front figure without a hat; taken within the past 6 months) Nationality and name must be indicated on the reverse side. One of the photographs should be pasted on the application form. )
4) Certificate of Enrollment issued by the applicant’s home institution
5) Official transcript (academic record) issued by the applicant’s home institution  (In case the academic record is not in a 100 point scale, please indicate a record of evaluation in a 100 point scale. Also, please mark (put a check(✓)) the subjects concerning Japanese and Japanese culture.)
6) Recommendation [prescribed form] from the university president or dean of the applicant’s home institution addressed to the President of Kanazawa University
7) Photocopy of the applicant’s passport (If unavailable at the time of application, please submit a photocopy of the birth certificate or the certificate of citizenship in the applicant’s home country along with a translation in Japanese or English.)
8) Pledge [prescribed form]
9) Photocopy of the Certificate of Japanese-Language Proficiency Test and the result sheet (For those who hold the certificate of the test Level 1, 2 or N1, N2 only.)
10) Certificate of health [prescribed form]
(Note)
If the applicant is accepted and will take part in the program as a privately financed student (without Japanese Government scholarship), “Agreement for Defraying Expenses” with Statement of Bank Account Balance which proves that the participant has funds equivalent to JPY 1,000,000 will be required to submit.

4 Notes
1) Applications will not be accepted if any of the above documents are incomplete, incorrect or not supported by evidence. They also will not be accepted if they arrive after the deadline. In case it is difficult to meet the deadline, please email or fax the applications first before the deadline, and send the original documents by express mail later.
2) The documents submitted will not be returned.
3) If the recipient has been receiving the scholarship despite his/her falling under any of the following situations, the recipient will be ordered to return the amount of scholarship that he/she received during the period wherein he/she was involved with any of the following situations.
a) The recipient is determined to have made a false statement on his/her application;
b) The recipient violates any article of his/her pledge (above 3-8));
c) The recipient violates Japanese law and is given life or more than one-year sentence of penal servitude or imprisonment. He/she who receives a suspended sentence is excluded;
d) The recipient is subjected to disciplinary action by the university, including expulsion;
e) It has been determined that it will be impossible for the recipient to complete the training course within the standard time period because of poor academic grades or suspension from the university;
f) The recipient’s residence status has changed to one other than College Student;
g) The recipient has received a scholarship from another institution (excluding those specified for research expenditures).
4) The scholarship will be stopped in case a recipient is absent from the university for a long period.
5) The purpose of this scholarship program is not to obtain a diploma. Therefore, a recipient cannot be enrolled in an undergraduate course at a university or a master’s or a doctorate course at a graduate school right after its completion.
6) In 2015, 13 out of 20 students who applied for the program through Kanazawa University were accepted to the program with the scholarship and 1 students were accepted without the scholarship.

What’s TSSP?
TSSP is designed for undergraduates majoring science and engineering. It aims to provide students with insight on what world society needs based on advanced science and technology in the future and how they can contribute to society. Program participants will have an opportunity to experience lectures with facility/laboratory visits followed by a final presentation based on group work. Topics covered in this program are:
Spintronics – Computer Vision in Robotics – Robotics – Neutrinos – Carbon Nanotube – Modern
Physical Chemistry – The 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and more. (Topics are subject to change.) In addition to exploring advanced science and technology, there will be Japanese language classes and field trips to historical sites, as well as workshops in Japanese traditional culture. Students will also have many opportunities to interact with Tohoku University students.

Kansai University 2016 Fall Semester Exchange Program

Following exchange student agreements, Kansai University accepts exchange students from affiliated universities each year in April and September. The International Division programme offers Japanese language classes and Japanese Studies classes for the exchange students. There are six levels of Japanese language classes that range from beginning to advanced according to the student’s level. Regardless of level, all of the classes emphasise the development of oral skills as well as reading and writing skills. The Japanese Studies classes include a wide variety of subjects: history, social structure, the cultural arts, the military arts, economics, philosophy and religion. All of the classes in Japanese Studies are in English.

Kansai University is proud to announce that we will be providing scholarships to participants of our Intensive Japanese Language and Culture Course (IJLC) held in July, 2016.
As a part of commemorative projects in celebration of university’s 130th anniversary, we have established “Global Scholarship Fund” in the aim of further university globalization by enhancing student mobility with our prestigious partner universities. We hope that your student will take this opportunity not only to learn Japanese language, but also to experience Japanese culture on our campus.
Kansai University Intensive Japanese Language and Culture Course (IJLC) is for 2 to 3 weeks held in summer and winter. The purpose is to provide instruction to overseas’ undergraduate and graduate students not only in Japanese language, but also in Japan studies including field trips to Kyoto, Kobe, or Osaka, and Japanese culture experience which enable the participants to learn and understand Japanese language, culture and society from various perspectives.
Qualifications:
Must be enrolled at Universitas Gadjah Mada as a regular student.
GPA must be 2.3 or higher out of 3.0
※Please recalculate the GPA using the conversion chart if the GPA system is not out of 3.0. If the GPA out of 3.0 is not available, we accept applicants whose academic performance is recognized as the satisfied level by the home university.
