Tohoku University is one of Japan’s leading national universities, located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Through the Cooperative Laboratory Study Program (COLABS), international graduate students have the opportunity to conduct research under the supervision of a faculty member at Tohoku University while participating in academic and research activities in their respective fields. As the program is research-oriented, applicants are required to obtain prior consent from a prospective academic advisor before proceeding with the official application.
We are pleased to inform you that the application for Tohoku University COLABS Student Exchange Program Spring 2027 is now open for Universitas Gadjah Mada students.
ELIGIBILITY
Graduate students nominated by Universitas Gadjah Mada for the COLABS Program.
Please refer to the official COLABS Application Procedures and consult with your faculty regarding eligibility and nomination requirements.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Applicants are required to prepare the documents requested through the COLABS online application (TAO) after obtaining prior consent from a prospective academic advisor.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
- Submit the aforementioned documents to UGM International Exposure Application Form:http://ugm.id/IntExposureApplication no later than 15 September 2026 for internal review.
- OIA staff will evaluate your application. Once you are selected as Nominated Applicants, OIA will confirm your official nomination to Tohoku University.
- After being nominated by OIA, applicants must complete the COLABS specific application process, including:
- Finding a prospective academic advisor.
- Submitting the Prior Consent of Acceptance Request Form (deadline: 15 October 2026, 15:00 JST).
- Receiving approval from the Student Exchange Division.
- Completing the online application through TAO (The Admissions Office) during the application period (1 October – 15 November 2026).
- The FINAL decision is from Tohoku University.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- The COLABS Program is a research-oriented exchange program requiring prior consent from a prospective academic advisor before submitting the online application.
- Applicants must not contact prospective academic advisors directly. All communication regarding prior consent must be conducted through the Student Exchange Division of Tohoku University.
- Applicants may submit prior consent requests to up to three prospective academic advisors, one at a time.
- For Spring 2027 admission:
- Prior Consent Request Period: 1 July – 15 October 2026 (15:00 JST)
- TAO Application Period: 1 October – 15 November 2026
- Classes begin in April 2027.
- In the meantime, students are required to keep the hard file of all documents until further notice by the Office of International Affairs.
- In case the faculty could not provide the Letter of Enrollment and Letter of Nomination during this period, the official nomination through email from the faculty is acceptable. The official nomination could be delivered to head-oia@ugm.ac.id (cc to scholarship@ugm.ac.id).
