UGM recently hosted a meeting with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) on January 21, 2026, as a follow-up to previous engagements aimed at establishing a broader, university-wide partnership. The meeting continued the collaboration between UGM and UTS that started in 2024 and marked an important milestone toward deepening institutional cooperation
UTS is a leading public research university located in Sydney, Australia. It consistently ranked as Australia’s top young university, being established in its current form in 1998. According to the QS World University Rankings 2026, UTS ranked 96th in the world and 9th in Australia.
Currently, UTS and UGM already maintain several faculty-level collaborations. These include a Doctoral Research Degree Program with the Faculty of Engineering UGM for 2024-2029, as well as a Program Collaboration Agreement with the Faculty of Biology UGM for 2025-2030.
Led by Professor Penny Martens as the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Higher Degrees by Research), the UTS delegation expressed strong interest in expanding cooperation to other faculties and study programs at UGM. Areas of potential collaboration include Pharmacy (particularly in traditional healthcare), Medicine, Nursing and Public Health, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Information Engineering, and Architecture.
In addition, UTS was also prioritizing research collaboration, student internships, LPDP-funded projects, PhD programs, and student exchanges. “While UTS’s collaboration was historically strongest with Engineering, we are now committed to a whole-of-university approach involving all faculties,” noted Distinguished Professor Alaina Ammit, the Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Science UTS.
UGM representatives, led by Prof. Dr. Wening Udasmoro, S.S., M.Hum. DEA as the Vice Rector for Education and Teaching UGM, warmly welcomed the plan to strengthen and expand collaboration between the two universities. Following the meeting, UGM and UTS agreed to explore and map out potential collaborations with each other across academic and research fields.
This renewed commitment reflects the shared vision of UGM and UTS to build a sustainable, impactful partnership that supports innovation, academic excellence, and global engagement in higher education.
