Imperial’s I-X Centre for AI in Science launched the Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Global Faculty Fellowship, supported by Schmidt Sciences. The Fellowship assists talented faculty members from global partner institutions to use AI to enhance their scientific research, while also building sustained local capacity at their home institutions.
1. FELLOWSHIP INFORMATION WEBINAR
Imperial’s I-X Centre for AI in Science launched the Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Global Faculty Fellowship, supported by Schmidt Sciences. The Fellowship assists talented faculty members from global partner institutions to use AI to enhance their scientific research, while also building sustained local capacity at their home institutions. The programme supports three cohorts of fellows each on a two-year programme (one year at Universitas Gadjah Mada, and one year at Imperial College London).
PROGRAM BENEFITS
The two-year fellowship will include the following:
- One year, fully-funded at Imperial including resources to help visa and relocation costs and supported by a dedicated onboarding assistant.
- Generous tax free stipend of £48,000 allocated for the year in London.
- Extra support for family
- Peer-to-peer support through in-house courses, workshops, technical talks and tutorials to share skills development and best practice.
- Cohort events, seminars and socials with the other AI in Science Fellows at Imperial and connections to the Women in AI network run from I-X.
- £30k ‘flexi-fund’ allowance per fellow for travel, conferences, and consumables. This will be managed by Imperial in the first year and by the home institution in the second year of the fellowship.
- Bidirectional visits to Imperial and other partners.
- Annual fellow-led conference and prize for the best AI in Science from Global researchers.
The I-X Centre for AI in Science will host a Zoom information webinar about the Global Faculty Fellowship on Tuesday 16th December 2025 at 08:00-09:00 GMT (15.00 local time).

2. GLOBAL FACULTY FELLOWSHIP MINI VISITS
Universitas Gadjah Mada is partnering with Imperial College London to offer visits for early-career researchers interested in implementing AI in their research.
The Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Global Faculty Fellowship, supported by Schmidt Sciences will offer 12 short visits of 2-6 weeks to visit Imperial College London, hosted by an Imperial academic and linked to the I-X Centre for AI in Science. These visits are exclusive to partners of Imperial participating in the Global Faculty Fellowship.
The visit provides flexible options for those interested in creating connections through networking with existing Fellows and Imperial Faculty, as well as opportunities for those wishing to collaborate by undertaking a short research project at Imperial, hosted in a relevant department.
The length of the visit should be between 2 and 6 weeks and take place in 2026.
Funding for the visit will cover:
- Subsistence grant: £950 per week to cover food, accommodation and other necessary expenses.
- Up to £1500 towards return economy flights
- Payment for standard visitor visa
- Contribution towards costs for travel/medical insurance
- Administrative support for visa application and ATAS clearance, where required.
