Tokyo University of Foreign Studies is the oldest academic institution devoted to international studies in Japan. It began as the Institute for Research of Foreign Documents (蛮書調所, Bansho Shirabesho), a Tokugawa shogunate’s translation bureau set up in 1857. It was subsequently established as an independent educational and research institution with the name Tokyo School of Foreign Languages (東京外国語学校, Tōkyō gaikokugo gakkō) in 1899.

It offers one semester’s load of work condensed into 3-weeks, during which renowned academics teach both domestic and international students. ABOUT THE PROGRAM

  • In its 18th run, The Hitachi Young Leaders Initiative (HYLI) 2026 once again becomes a launchpad for Asia’s brightest students to make their mark on the future. From May 24–29, 2026 in Cebu, Philippines, HYLI will gather outstanding delegates from 8 Asian countries: Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan. These delegates will engage in powerful conversations with their peers, leaders in government, business, academia, and beyond.

 

OFFERED OPPORTUNITY

This five-day leadership program offers selected delegates the opportunity to:

  • Further develop the delegate’s perception and understanding of regional and global issues that impact society
  • Encourage Asian solidarity among potential young leaders by addressing regional challenges together

ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in the following eight universities, irrespective of their country of origin, prior work experience and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply.

  4. The Chinese University of Hong Kong
  5. The Education University of Hong Kong

  • Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

 

FELLOWSHIP AWARD

  • The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$340,800 (approximately US$43,690) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$14,200 (approximately US$1,820) per year for each awardee for a period up to three years. 400 PhD Fellowships will be awarded in the 2026/27 academic year*. For awardees who need more than three years to complete the PhD degree, additional support may be provided by the chosen universities. SELECTION CRITERIA

While candidates’ academic excellence is of primary consideration, the Selection Panels will take into account factors as follows:

  • Academic excellence;
  • Research ability and potential;
  • Communication and interpersonal skills; and

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

  • Sophia University offers short-term January and Summer Sessions for students interested in Japan and East Asia. These programs provide a unique chance to explore Japanese language, culture, and society while experiencing Tokyo’s dynamic urban life. Since 1961, the Summer Session has welcomed over 11,000 students worldwide, many of whom have pursued careers related to Japan. The January Session, launched in 2013, also attracts students with courses on contemporary issues and cultural insights.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Be a current student or graduate of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree program outside of Japan. Students from high schools or community colleges that do not have the authority to confer degrees equivalent to undergraduate level degrees in Japan are not eligible for this program.
  • Submit ALL required documents to apply for the session by the designated application deadline. Late applications will not be accepted.
  • The minimum academic requirement is GPA 2.8 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent.

  • Dormitory Scholarship: Provide 2 Students with 50 % Dormitory Scholarship per 10 Students from 1 Partner University (Max. 30 students)
    – If the institution dispatches 20 students to the exchange program, 4 students will be granted a scholarship covering 50% of the dormitory fee
    – Around 650,000 won (Regular dormitory fee : Approx. 1,300,000 won)
  • 3 Korean Language Courses: Up to 3 designated Korean language courses provided per semester
  • Part Time Job Opportunity: Opportunities for Students to Participate in Part-Time Jobs (Hourly Wage Approx. 10,000 won)
  • Class Registration: Free to all Classes (Except for some classes that the department restricts its registration)

  2. Enrolled in Universitas Gadjah Mada during the program
  3. Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  4. Be proficient in English and/or Korean

  8. Motivation Letter
  9. Colored Copy of Passport
  10. Confirmation Letter of Participation (download) 
  11. Passport Size Photo 

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  1. Submit the aforementioned documents to UGM International Exposure Application Form: http://ugm.id/IntExposureApplication no later than 01 November 2025 for internal review.
  2. OIA staff will evaluate your application. Once you are selected as Nominated Applicants, OIA will confirm your official nomination to Jeonbuk National University and you may proceed to the online application no later than 28 November 2025.
  3. The FINAL decision is from Jeonbuk National University.

 

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • In the meantime, the students are required to keep the hard file of all documents until further notice by the Office of International Affairs.
  • In case the faculty could not provide the letter of enrollment and nomination during this period, the official nomination through email from the faculty is acceptable. The official nomination could be delivered to head-oia@ugm.ac.id (cc to scholarship@ugm.ac.id)
