We are pleased to inform you that the application for 2026 UTokyo GUC Off-Campus Programs is now open for Universitas Gadjah Mada students.
PROGRAM INFORMATION
The University of Tokyo is offering two new experiential, short-term summer programs. Both combine rigorous academic coursework at the Hongo Campus in Tokyo with hands-on, off-campus field experiences. They are taught entirely in English and grant “Global Units” (UCTS aligned) and official certificates upon completion.
Program 1: Field Study Program (Hokkaido)
- Theme & Course: “Sustainability and Tourism: Experiential Learning in Hokkaido” (2.0 Global Units).
- Dates: June 8 – June 12, 2026 (5 Days).
- Location: Starts at UTokyo’s Hongo Campus (Tokyo), followed by field study at the UTokyo Hokkaido Forest in Furano (a stunning site normally off-limits to the public).
- Focus: Engaging in hands-on experiences with Hokkaido’s flora, fauna, landscapes, and indigenous Ainu cultures to address SDGs.
- Fees: * Program Fee: JPY 380,000
- Travel Expenses (Tokyo to Hokkaido flights/transit): JPY 80,000
Program 2: Internship Experience Program (Okinawa)
- Theme & Course: “Sustainability and Tourism: Internship Experience in Okinawa” (2.0 Global Units).
- Dates: June 1 – June 11, 2026 (11 Days).
- Location: Week 1 is at UTokyo’s Hongo Campus (Tokyo); Week 2 takes place across various locations in Okinawa.
- Focus: Exploring Okinawa’s history, geopolitics, and sustainability. It features a visit to the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) and a 3-day unpaid internship arranged by the region’s leading business federation (Okinawa Keizai Doyukai).
- Fees: Program Fee: JPY 380,000
- Travel Expenses (Tokyo to Okinawa flights/transit): JPY 120,000
Language & Optional Courses
- Core Language: English (Minimum proficiency: TOEFL iBT 90 or IELTS 6.5).
- Survival Japanese: An optional 5-day intensive Japanese course is available for beginners (earns 0.5 Global Units) for an additional JPY 40,000. Note: For the Okinawa internship, this course is strongly encouraged if the student has no Japanese background.
Eligibility & Application Details
- Who can apply: Full-time undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at a university outside Japan (must have completed at least one academic term).
- Application Fee: JPY 5,000 (Non-refundable).
- Partner Discount: Students from partner institutions (like UGM) receive a 20% discount on the Program Fee (Travel expenses are not discounted).
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
- Apply directly to University of Tokyo.
- The deadline is Monday, March 16, 2026, at 16:00 (Japan Standard Time).
- The FINAL decision is from University of Tokyo .
IMPORTANT NOTES
- In the meantime, the students are required to keep the hard file of all documents until further notice by the Office of International Affairs.
- In case the faculty could not provide the letter of enrollment and nomination during this period, the official nomination through email from the faculty is acceptable. The official nomination could be delivered to head-oia@ugm.ac.id (cc to scholarship@ugm.ac.id)
