PUBLIC LECTURE

The two Public Lecture sessions were held to highlight the more focused themes on this year’s DREaM’s big theme “Community Improvement through Women Empowerment.” The first session emphasized the issues of women empowerment and feminist activism and their roles in community development, both at the national and international levels. For this session, DREaM 2019 invited Yenny Wahid, the Director of Wahid Foundation, also known as Gus Dur’s daughter, and Lily Puspasari, Program Management Specialist of UN Women Indonesia. Lily Puspasari opened the lecture by presenting a video about the journey of women’s rights movement in the world from 1911 through to 2015. She then began her presentation which focused on feminism, gender equality, and the empowerment of women. Following that, Yenny Wahid delivered her presentation focusing on women empowerment and its effect on community development in Indonesia. This first public lecture session was also open for the public and the venue was a full house.

The second Public Lecture session took place on the following day, which centered around the sub-theme of “Empowering Women through Activism and Education.” In this session, two speakers were invited. They are Dr. Novi Kurnia, head of the postgraduate program in the Department of Communication Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, UGM, and a pioneer activist in digital literacy, and Nur Hasyim, co-founder of Aliansi Laki-laki Baru. Dr. Kurnia started the session by presenting a lecture titled “Women and Education in the Digital Age: Empowering Indonesian Women through Digital Literacy.” Later on, Nur Hasyim continued the session by delivering a presentation on “Engaging Men and Boys in Achieving Gender Equality and Ending Men’s Violence Against Women and Girls.”

The participants were involved actively in the two Public Lectures. They were engaged in the question and answer session, which revealed deeper knowledge from what had been delivered by the respective speakers. The way of how the speakers presented their lecture was also communicative, so that enabled the students to respond the lectures directly.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Following the Public Lecture 1 and 2, the DREaM 2019 Internship Program was conducted on 22-24 July 2019. Align with this year’s theme, the topic emphasized through internship program was ‘Understanding Women Empowerment through the Perspective of Government, Business and Non-Governmental Organization’. The program aims to provide participants with contextual understanding to comprehend the role of women in various fields as well as how women advocate their aspirations through different medium/institution.

In conducting the Internship Program, DREaM 2019 collaborated with three different institutions as follow:

1. Agency for Women Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control (DP3A2) Yogyakarta Province (Government institution)
2. Agradaya (Business institution)
3. Yayasan Annisa Swasti (Non-governmental organization)

DREaM participants were divided into three groups with each group assigned in one institution during the three days of internship. The institutions represented different roles in women empowerment activities in Yogyakarta and provided different and unique insight and approach that enriched the perspective of participants. From government institution, participants learned about the policy and implementation. From the business sector, participants learned how business runs and at the same time strives to give social impact to the stakeholders. Last but not least, participants learned how social initiative advocates the interest of women workers.

The Internship Program consisted of two and a half days of working at the institutions and concluded by Group Presentations session on the last day. The activities at the institutions were ranging from introduction and discussion at office, observation, and dialogue with stakeholders, participation in the field activities, as well as evaluation and feedback session. As for the report and presentation session, each of the groups was given the opportunity to present the lesson learned throughout the internship program in a respected institution.

 

WAP (WORKSHOP ACTION PLAN)

Workshop Action Plan (WAP) was arranged to give a general briefing to the participants before they conduct their community service activity in Bantul. In the first session of the agenda, Prof. Irfan Dwidya Prijambada as the Director for Community Service UGM delivered a presentation about the compulsory community service in UGM. From his explanation, it is expected that the participants are able to understand deeper about community service in UGM and gain more knowledge before getting involved in the community service activity. In the second session, the participants were divided into six groups. They sat together in their own group accompanied by the local students in UGM who were conducting their community service activity in the six villages in Yogyakarta as well as their supervisor. The supervisor and UGM local students gave an overview of the condition of the villages as well as its existing social problems, and their projects during the community service activity. In the end, the participants were given the opportunity to have a group discussion and brainstorming about their action plan in order to address the related social problems and find the possible solution for the social problems.

 

COMMUNITY SERVICE

In this DREaM Summer Program, the participants were given the opportunity to conduct the Community Service (CS) activity for 4 days and 3 nights. As CS is a compulsory program in UGM, on the same occasion, the third year of UGM students were also assigned to conduct their CS activity for 2 months spread in 34 provinces across Indonesia. Having understood that, the organizers were in a view that this would be a good idea to merge such a short DREaM CS program with the ongoing UGM CS activity. By doing so, it helped the participants to connect more deeply with the members of their host community. On the other hand, this also placed them in situations that ignited cooperation and communication in a friendly and appreciative environment in order to allow them making new friends much easier.

In this program, the participants were divided into six groups (5-6 members per group) where they stayed in six different villages with six different programs which cover these following locations:

1. Karangtengah village located in Imogiri Sub-district, Bantul (Community Empowerment – Eco-Tourism Geographic System);
2. Sriharjo village located in Imogiri Sub-district, Bantul (Post-Disaster Management);
3. Wukirsari village located in Imogiri Sub-district, Bantul (Community Improvement through Small Medium Enterprises);
4. Guwosari village located in Pajangan Sub-district, Bantul (Optimization of Edu-Tourism Villages through Biodiversity Conservation);
5. Trimulyo village located in Jetis Sub-district, Bantul (Mapping of Trimulyo Village’s Potential); and
6. Bangunjiwo village located in Kasihan Sub-district, Bantul (Mapping of Bangunjiwo Village’s Potential).

The DREaM participants together with UGM students made a team where they worked together for 4 days to empower the local community. It is expected that through the program, the participants can learn from the society about Indonesian local wisdom as well as its best practices.

 

SOCIAL EVENT

Every year, the social event is something that always being anticipated by the DREaM participants. In DREaM 2019, the participants are invited to enjoy various kinds of socio-cultural activities during the two-week program. To start off the program, the participants were introduced to UGM campus by cycling around the university, started from the Center Library and finished at the UGM’s oldest building, the Rectorate or UGM Main Building. This agenda was followed by the Program Orientation prepared by the committee to let the participants know more about the program details throughout the DREaM 2019. Later in the evening, the participants were officially welcomed on the Welcoming Dinner event at Bilik Kayu Heritage Resto. The event was opened by Dr. Danang Sri Hadmoko as the Director for Partnership, Alumni and Global Initiatives. Before the dinner, the committee had invited Unit Tari Bali, the UGM student group for Balinese traditional dance to perform Sekar Jagat dance as a welcome dance for the participants.

On the second day after the first Public Lecture session, the participants visited Taman Sari Water Castle. On the following day, the committee took the participants to enjoy the sunset on the Krakal Beach, Wonosari. Then on the weekend, the participants enjoyed the full two days of excursion to Prambanan Temple, watching the spectacular Ramayana Ballet performance, experiencing thrilling ride through Merapi Lava Tour, and visiting one of the most enchanting museums at Ullen Sentalu museum.

On the last day of the DREaM 2019 program, the committee took the participants to learn gamelan and batik making at Pentingsari village, Kaliurang. In the evening, the farewell dinner was held at Rajaklana Resto, Bantul. A closing remark was given by Dr. Paripurna as the Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Alumni. During the closing dinner, some participants took the chance to deliver their impressions and experiences during DREaM 2019 program. The committees also held special awarding to the participants after the formal certificate awarding. The performances from the participants added the festive mood of the night. They teamed up with participants from different countries to perform some songs and group dance. At the very end of the event, the committee tried to romanticize the atmosphere by playing the compilation video containing the footage of activities during the two-week program. The event ended with the warm feelings and new optimism they got from all the experience with their new friends during the program.
