The Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics Succeeds in Hosting the International Joint Conference ASTECHNOVA-EPIC 2021

The Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics had just held the online ASTECHNOVA-EPIC 2021 International Joint Conference which was held on August 24-25, 2021 which had 510 participants from 12 different countries.

Bangladesh, Germany, Taiwan, Singapore, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Canada, the United States, and Indonesia were among the twelve countries that participated. The Joint Conference concept was used since the event was made up of two different international conferences, ASTECHNOVA and EPIC, but the implementation was done at the same time.

ASTECHNOVA is an annual international energy seminar hosted by the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics in partnership with the Non-Aligned Movement Centre for South-South Technical Cooperation (NAM CSSTC).

EPIC (Engineering Physics International Conference) is held every 2 years by universities that are members of the Badan Kerja Sama Teknik Fisika (BKSTF). This year is UGM’s Physics Engineering Study Program’s turn to organize EPIC so that its implementation is integrated with ASTECHNOVA. The ASTECHNOVA theme is “Innovations for Energy Security” dan tema EPIC adalah “The Role of Engineering Physics for Sustainable Development Goals.”

The event for the implementation of the 2021 ASTECHNOVA-EPIC International Joint Conference was opened with remarks by the Rektor of Gadjah Mada University, Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D.Eng. In his speech, Prof. Panut emphasized the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration to realize sustainable energy security.

“UGM will be at the forefront of research in the field of renewable energy and the achievement of sustainable development goals,” he said on Wednesday (24/8).

The event on the first day was also attended by the Minister of Transportation, Ir. Budi Karya Sumadi, who delivered the keynote speech with the title “Energy Transition in Transportation Sector to Support National Energy Independence and Security”.

The event then continued with a panel session where various international scientists presented material related to progress in their respective fields. For example, Prof. John Z. Zhai, (University of Colorado Boulder, USA) who discussed “Nearly Zero Energy Building: Challenges and Opportunities”, Prof. Aya Hagishima, (Kyushu University, Japan) who discussed “Affordable strategies for sustainable and health built-environment tailored to local context”, Dr. Andang Widi Harto (Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia) who discussed “Nuclear Security for Advanced Nuclear Reactors Case Study: Molten Salt Reactor (MSR)” and eleven other scientists.

After the panel session, the International Conference continued with a parallel session with 78 papers presented at EPIC and 47 papers presented at ASTECHNOVA. Moreover, the outputs of these various papers will be published in reputable proceedings, namely AIP Conference Proceeding for EPIC papers and IOP Earth and Environmental Science for ASTECHNOVA papers.

The implementation of the International Conference was closed with the awarding of 6 best papers and 6 best presenters by the Head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics, namely Dr. Alexander Agung.

The Director of NAM CSSTC, Ambassador Diar Nurbintoro, also gave closing remarks by emphasizing the importance of multi-stakeholder coordination and synergy to realize sustainable development goals, and hoped that interesting findings from research presented at the conference could be duplicated in participating countries.
