The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV-KNAW) is an Academy research institute. The KITLV conducts interdisciplinary and comparative historical research. Its research focus is Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, with an emphasis on Indonesia and the ‘Dutch’ Caribbean. It is particularly interested in such issues as state formation, violence and citizenship, processes of mobility and the formation of ethnic and national identity. KITLV is active in the humanities, social sciences and comparative area studies and works closely with Leiden University.
We are pleased to inform you that the application for the KITLV Visiting Fellowships (2025–2026) and the NIAS-NIOD-KITLV Fellowship is now open to the UGM academic community, especially for the Social Sciences and Humanities cluster.
PROGRAM INFORMATION
1.Visiting fellowships 2025-2026
ELIGIBILITY
- Have a PhD in the Social Sciences and/or Humanities;
- Carry out research in the field(s) of Southeast Asian and/or Caribbean Studies;
- Are interested to carry out their desired research in the Netherlands;
- Are prepared to be based at KITLV during the entire period of the fellowship;
- Are not a (tax) resident of The Netherlands.

2. NIAS-NIOD-KITLV Fellowship
ELIGIBILITY
- Researchers (selected amongst historians, archaeologists, social scientists, heritage experts, artists, journalists, and/or cultural activists) based in formerly colonised countries with collections in the Netherlands
- Have an interest in (lost) collections or objects from those countries or regions that are kept in the Netherlands.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
- Curriculum Vitae and list of publications, works or products
- Plan of activities to be carried out during the fellowship, max 500 words
- An outline of objects or collections in the Netherlands (and possibly abroad) to be researched, max 500 words
- Reflections on how this research relates to agenda’s, needs and questions in the country of origin, max 500 words
- Reflections on how this research may help in finding new local or supra-local histories that go beyond dominant frames of heritage institutions or states, max 500 words
