Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in collaboration with Ritsumeikan University (RU) has succesfully execute the first joint initiative, “the Ritsumeikan University – Global Fieldwork Program (GFP) 2024”. The program, themed “Introduction to Indonesian Social and Cultural Studies,” aims to foster collaboration and offer an immersive cultural experience to RU students away from Japan.
GFP 2024 represents a pioneering endeavor between UGM and RU, designed to facilitate collaboration and cross-cultural exchange among students. Twenty RU students, accompanied by one RU Supervisor, joined forces with fourteen UGM students to participate in a week-long series of activities, including campus tours, lectures, fieldwork, discussions with UGM student organizations, site visits, and final presentations.
On the Program Orientation session, Dr. Wiratni, Deputy Director for Directorate of Partnership and Global Initiatives, welcomed RU Supervisor and Students, expressing hopes for a fruitful and enjoyable experience during their time in Yogyakarta.
Continued by UGM lecturers provided insights into Indonesian culture and academia, with lectures by Dr. Alfatika Aunuriella Dini, Dr. Ahmad Munjid, and Dr. Agus Suwignyo from various academic units. Particularly engaging was the session with UGM students from KAMASTAWA (Keluarga Mahasiswa Bahasa, Sastra, dan Budaya Jawa), where participants experienced hands-on practice and discussions about the gamelan traditional instrument.
RU Students also participated in the sharing session with Dr. I Made Andi Arsana on Bali and Hinduism, sparking curiosity among participants, followed by discussions with UGM Student Organizations Unit Tari Bali and Keluarga Mahasiswa Hindu Dharma. Participants had the opportunity to experience Balinese dance moves firsthand, enhancing their understanding of Indonesian cultural practices.
Fieldwork sessions on February 13 and 14 allowed participants to explore Yogyakarta’s cultural landmarks, including Borobudur Temple, Prambanan Temple, Taman Sari Castle, and Malioboro. A visit to UGM’s Agrotechnology Innovation Center at Berbah provided insights into innovation and traditional practices in agriculture and waste management.
The program concluded with the closing dinner brought participants and organizers together, featuring performances and reflections on the program’s impact. Dr. Alfatika, Head of the Office of International Affairs, expressed hopes that the program’s experiences would leave a lasting, positive impression on RU students and deepen their understanding of Indonesia, particularly Yogyakarta.
