Greetings from Utsunomiya University, Japan!
Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) has started to recruit the 2023 MEXT Scholarship students who wish to study Japanese language and culture. Utsunomiya University are pleased to announce the recruitment for this scholarship is now open for Universitas Gadjah Mada students!
Please refer to the application guideline and checklist carefully. Please note that this program is different from the student exchange program. The main purpose of this program is NOT to simply learn Japanese language.
Eligibility
- Enrolled in Universitas Gadjah Mada during the program
- Students must be born between April 2, 1993, and April 1, 2005.
- Undergraduate student majoring in fields related to the Japanese language and/or Japanese culture
- Have studied Japanese Studies at university for a total period of one year or more as of September 1st, 2023
- Students must have passed JLPT N2 (or N1) or considered to be at the same level as N1 by the accepting university

Required Documents

*Print on both sides of the paper (duplex printing). - Two photos taken within six months prior to the application deadline (4.5 × 3.5 cm, headshot, with
no hats or other headgear. Applicant’s name and nationality should be written on the back of
photos) - Copy of the passport photo page
- Certificate of enrollment issued by applicant’s home university
- Official transcript of academic record issued by applicant’s home university
*For all grades. Mark subjects that are related to the Japanese language or Japanese culture. - Letter of recommendation written by the President or Dean of the applicant’s home university
(addressed to the President of Utsunomiya University (the President’s name is Tsukasa IKEDA) - Documents verifying that the applicant has studied the Japanese language or Japanese culture for at least one year. (Only for those who cannot verify by the official transcript of academic record that they studied the Japanese language or Japanese culture for a total of at least one year at university.)
- Certificate of JLPT(N1 or N2 *In principle, passed within the past 2 years.)
- Certificate of health (download)
The documents above must be printed at A4 size and prepared in Japanese or English. Typing is
preferable to handwriting. If any documents are prepared in any other language, attach a Japanese
translation to each document.

Application Procedure
- Submit the aforementioned documents to UGM International Exposure Application Form: http://ugm.id/IntExposureApplication no later than March 1, 2023, for internal review. Please keep the hard file documents with you.
- OIA staff will evaluate your application. Once you are selected as a Nominated Applicant, OIA will confirm your official nomination to Utsunomiya University and you may proceed to the application.
- The FINAL decision is from Utsunomiya University and from MEXT.
