UGM Holds Joint Research Workshop with IIT Bombay

On Friday (17/9), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) successfully held a joint research workshop on Earth Sciences (Geology and Geophysics) with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). The workshop, meant to be the first step in the two universities’ new partnership, was held virtually via Webex and attended by professors from both universities.

IIT Bombay itself is an institute of technology located in the centre of Mumbai, India. IIT Bombay is an institute of eminence and has contributed various innovations, inventions, and research to India and the world which include the launch of a satellite into space and the invention of alternative ventilators for Covid-19.

Prof. Amit Agarwal, the Dean of International Relations from IIT Bombay, opened the one-day workshop with his remarks. In it, he expressed his eagerness in collaborating further with UGM and stated that the two universities could come together to discuss the way forward further. Prof. Sanatu Banerjee, the Head of the Department of Earth Science at IIT Bombay, echoed Prof. Agarwal’s sentiments and hopes that, after the workshop, the two universities could engage in meaningful collaboration.

In the same vein, UGM’s Director of Cooperation, Alumni and International Initiative, Dr. Danang Sri Hadmoko, M.Sc. stated that the objective of the workshop is to strengthen and find common ideas in the cooperation. He further added that UGM is lucky to be able to cooperate with IIT Bombay and acknowledged the common cultural and historical grounds of India and Indonesia. “Start small but sure and grow over time with measurable output, outcome, and impact.” He closed his remarks.

The workshop itself was attended by over 40 lecturers and professors from both UGM and IIT Bombay. Six professors from both universities presented research on behalf of their research teams. The speaker representatives from UGM are: Dr. Eng. Lucas Donny Setijadji and Dr. Donatus Hendra Amijaya from Department of Geology, Faculty of Engineering; and Dr. rer.nat. Wiwit Suryanto from Geophysics Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The research explored in the joint workshop covered the topics of geophysics for Earth resource exploration and geohazard mitigation, petrology and economic geology, igneous and metamorphic geology, hydrocarbon-based geo resources, and petroleum exploration.
