International Student Summit (ISS): Live Your Best Life in Indonesia!

On 23-25 August of 2021, the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia x Kampus Merdeka held an event called International Student Summit (ISS).  This is an Indonesia cultural introduction program specified for Developing Countries Partnership Program (Beasiswa Kemitraan Negara Berkembang-KNB) awardees. KNB itself is a scholarship program offered by the Government of Republic Indonesia for international students coming from developing countries. As the result, participants of ISS come from a wide range of countries, including India, Timor Leste, Egypt, and others.

This year, Universitas Negeri Malang (UNM) was chosen as the host university and Office of International Affairs (OIA) UNM was chosen as the committee. From Universitas Gadjah Mada, there were about 15 KNB awardees who attended this program. ISS aimed to make international students understand more about Indonesia’s language, culture, and diversity through casual things. This program also served as a networking tool for international students.

ISS was held using Zoom Meeting as its media with interactive workshop concept.  Participants were asked to pick their favorite ISS module on the registration form. “Indonesian Coffee and Culinary” is Module A theme, while “Indonesian Dance and Music” is Module B theme. Each module would be separated into breakout rooms.

On day one (23rd of August, 2021), participants focused on the introductory (basic) session of Bahasa Indonesia, thereby the session called Indonesian Language Course 101. It was tutored by Mustika Nur Amalia. After that, participants were assigned into breakout rooms, according to their chosen module. Participants who chose Module A learned about Indonesian Coffee, and Module B participants learned about Indonesian Music. The fun part, participants could demonstrate what they’re learning along with the workshop (real-time).

Then on day two (24th of August, 2021) participants continued their Bahasa lesson with Candrika Citrasari as the tutor. Following that, participants returned to their module sessions. Module A learned how to make mie kuah, and Module B learned about traditional dance. And yes, participants could bring their phone up to the kitchen and try to make mie kuah whilst watching the chef. A number of participants used their plates and followed the instructor’s instructions to try Tari Piring.

On the final day (25th of August, 2021), a number of participants were asked to present what they have learned through ISS’ modules. The committee also held some competitions as the following events of ISS. The competitions are still running until 30th of October, 2021. There will be five types of competition, consisting of vlog, speech, music video, essay, and news-reading.

This program was well-received by the participants.”Thank you for providing us with such a wonderful opportunity to have a good time during these difficult times. I can’t express my gratitude in words. It could only be expressed in Bali dance,” said Zeeshan, one of the KNB awardee who is currently pursuing his degree in Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Hervina Adhanita, Liaison Officer of ISS for Universitas Gadjah Mada shared similar thoughts. “It’s engaging enough for students, especially those Bahasa Indonesia courses because there are some who can’t really speak Indonesian. They were asking if there would be any other event like this,” said her.
