UGM’s Participation in the 2021 Forum of Presidents of China-ASEAN Geosciences Universities

UGM participated in the 2021 Forum of Presidents of China-ASEAN Geosciences Universities held on Friday, May 21, 2021. The forum is a part of the China-ASEAN Mining Cooperation Forum & Exhibition which has been held for eleven consecutive years by China-ASEAN College. The China-ASEAN College is a joint cooperation between geosciences departments in Chinese and ASEAN universities founded by Chendu Center of China Geological Survey (CC-CDU), Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT), and China University of Geosciences (CUG).

The forum specifically invites leaders of each member universities to share their suggestions on improving geosciences research cooperation between China and ASEAN geosciences universities. Through this forum, leaders are expected to discuss concrete steps and programs to facilitate this cooperation, including devising exchange programs for students and researchers as well as discussing possibilities to secure a joint research funding.

Rector of UGM, Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D.Eng., IPU, ASEAN Eng., represented UGM in the forum and delivered the university’s take on geosciences research and cooperation. UGM is the only university from Indonesia that received the opportunity to present its ideas.

In his speech, Rector of UGM elaborated on the research focuses of the geosciences disciplines in UGM. One of them is disaster risk and management due to its relevance with Indonesia’s geographical position and condition. UGM also focuses on the geoscientific aspects of energy management, both conventional and new and renewable energy. Additionally, as technological access continues to pose a challenge for research development, UGM consistently conducts research on low/effective cost technology for geoscience-related activities such as drones, unmanned surface vehicles, and other tools.

UGM welcomes the initiative from other universities to conduct joint academic and research programs. As the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia gears up to strengthen the implementation of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program, UGM believes that this will provide an opportunity for more intense and comprehensive research cooperation. Through this forum, it is hoped that UGM and other member universities of the China-ASEAN College can produce geosciences research outputs that can be useful for the region’s development. Partisipasi UGM dalam 2021 Forum of Presidents of China-ASEAN Geosciences Universities

(Safira/OIA)
