The summer course on the nexus between traditional ecological knowledge and modern agricultural practices in the Faculty of Agriculture UGM is of great significance due to several reasons. First, local wisdom is one priority of the ‘Three Principles of Higher Education, comprises of education, research, and community service’) of Universitas Gadjah Mada. The topic is in line with the Faculty of Agriculture’s research and community service roadmap: “smart eco-bioproduction”.
The Faculty of Agriculture has accumulated a list of experiences in education, research, and community service. In education, the Faculty of Agriculture has been actively involved in the summer school of food security and climate change in 2017-2019. The first year of the summer school took agroforestry as the main topic, the second year looked at integrated farming in palm oil plantation, and the third year compared monoculture with cacao polyculture farming system. The Faculty of Agriculture has also been progressively studied the interconnectedness between TEK and modern agricultural practices. This includes research on agroforestry and integrated farming technology in cooperation with the Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, and Indonesian State Forestry Company of the Central Java Province. In collaboration with Ghent University, Belgium, the Faculty of Agriculture also did research in organic agriculture in Bantul, Yogyakarta, which guided small-scale farmers in the area toward organic agricultural practices and aimed for organic certification of the local farmers’ groups.
