Warm greetings from Charles University, Prague
Charles University was founded in 1348, making it one of the oldest universities in the world. Yet it is also renowned as a modern, dynamic, cosmopolitan and prestigious institution of higher education. It is the largest and most renowned Czech university, and is also the best-rated Czech university according to international rankings. There are currently 17 faculties at the University (14 in Prague, 2 in Hradec Králové and 1 in Plzeň), plus 3 institutes, 6 other centres of teaching, research, development and other creative activities, a centre providing information services, 5 facilities serving the whole University, and the Rectorate – which is the executive management body for the whole University.
The Charles University Online Winter School 2021 provides students with a broad understanding of the most significant impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and its multifaceted practical implications, which are currently shaping the dynamics of international relations in these turbulent times. During the course, students will improve their research, communication and argumentation skills and learn how to use them in the online environment.
The online course will be titled “International Relations in Challenging Times: The Multifaceted Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic”. This online course will be launched from January 25 to January 29, 2021.
After attending the course, students should:
- Understand the key factors, multifaceted impacts, and political implications currently shaping the dynamics of international relations in the turbulent times of the COVID-19 pandemic
- be able to analyze how today’s world is being transformed by the challenges and risks of the COVID-19 pandemic
- complete a paper on a chosen topic, utilizing the multiple learning methods of the online course, such as live online lectures, group discussions and projects, individual assignments based on reading materials, and independent research
- utilize the dynamics of an international group of students to improve their communication and argumentation skills
Fees and costs: 300 EUR (ca 7900 CZK)
Total price includes: tuition (for all lectures, an introductory and a wrap-up session, group workshops, discussions, etc. as mentioned in the programme below); readings and other materials (on-line versions will be at your disposal after enrolling); an individualized evaluation of the participant’s performance, discussions and assignments; an official certificate confirming attendance; and a transcript to gain European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits
Academic Credit: Two or four ECTS credits (check below)
There are two options for gaining ECTS credits after successful completion of all requirements of the Online Winter University
- Two ECTS credits: Students will earn 2 ECTS credits for active participation in the programme, including attendance (minimum attendance of 85 percent of course sessions), preparation for the sessions and the final discussion (reading of assigned materials), and active participation in assigned group projects. Additionally, students have to submit a 4-page essay on the topic of the Online Winter School. Student’s works have to be submitted within two weeks after the course finishes.
- Four ECTS credits: Students will earn 4 ECTS credits for active participation in the programme as described above. Additionally, students have to submit either an 8-page essay on the topic of the Online Winter School or an outcome of an assigned group or individual project (e.g., a podcast on the topic of the Online Winter School). Student’s works have to be submitted within three weeks after the course finishes.
Eligibility
- Undergraduate students (S1) and Postgraduate students (S2)
- Participants preferably study related to the topic of this year’s Winter School, e. g. Area Studies, International Relations, Political Science and Geopolitics, or another relevant field of study
- Enrolled in Universitas Gadjah Mada during the program
- Be proficient in English. Non-native English speakers must have a score of at least TOEFL ITP 550, TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS 6.5.

Application Procedure
- Finish the application to Charles University Online Winter School directly. (Application is possible via this link)
- Submit the aforementioned documents to UGM International Exposure Application Form:http://ugm.id/IntExposureApplication no later than January 12st, 2021 for OIA’s internal documentation.
- THE FINAL decision from Charles University.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- In the meantime, the students are required to keep a copy of the hard file of all documents until further notice by the Office of International Affairs.
- In case the faculty could not provide the letter of enrollment and nomination during this period, the official nomination through email from the faculty is acceptable. The official nomination could be delivered to head-oia@ugm.ac.id (cc to scholarship@ugm.ac.id)
