Founded in 1978 in honor of Sejong the Great, the Fourth King of Joseon and overseer of the creation of the Korean alphabet, Hangul, as Kyung Sung Humanities Institute was converted into the present name of the Institute.

Sejong University’s history started in Mai 1940 when Dr. Youngha Choo and Dr. Okja Choi founded the Kyung Sung Humanities Institute. In 1947 it was reorganized and turned into a junior college with Dr. Choo as his first director and the Seoul Women Teachers’ Institute. 1954 Soodo Women’s Teachers’ College was founded.
