Rationale
Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading public health problems in Thailand, which accounts for 7 deaths every hour in 2014. In the recent year, emerging risk factors for atherosclerosis known as vascular dysfunction have been proposed to be the risk factor for arthritis.
Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the fourth contribution of years lived with disability (YLDs). In addition, the study published in Annuals of Rheumatic Diseases reported that men who had osteoarthritis in any finger joint were 42 percent more likely to die of heart disease than were men without arthritis in any fingers. Women with OA in a finger joint were 26 percent more likely to die of heart disease.
Physical therapist is one of the health professionals who have an important role in exercise prescription for the patients. Exercise is an important lifestyle modification for disease prevention and treatment in both musculoskeletal and cardiovascular disease patients. Therefore, the 3rd International Physical Therapy Conference and the 4th Physical Therapy Mahidol University Research Symposium (the 3rd IPTC and the 4th PTMURS) in 2016 will update the information about the relationship between the arthritis and cardiovascular disease. Moreover, the evidence about the exercise program for both groups of patients will be mentioned.
The 3rd IPTC and the 4th PTMURS will also promote the collaboration in research between the health professionals. We as the host hope that the 3rd IPTC and the 4th PTMURS will provide a forum for knowledge sharing for the participants.
