Introduction

The Pare Program provides students with an opportunity to study with students from different countries, cultures and areas of specialization to tackle issues related to populations, activities, resources and environments (PARE) in Asia. Students will also have a chance to study for several weeks to a year at PARE Hokkaido University, Japan.

Program Objectives
The global population is expanding at the bottom of the wealth pyramid. Increased poverty leads to urbanization with enhanced human activity, which in turn causes resource depletion, greater environmental impacts, increased food shortages and a deterioration in public sanitation, resulting in more poverty.

The issues related to the chain of Populations-Activities-Resources-Environments (PARE) involves a wide variety of topics, such as the mitigation of problems relating to food and nutrition, optimization of urban and rural areas, optimization of resource usage, and monitoring/mitigation of environmental issues. This means that a resolution of the issues related to PARE will require an interdisciplinary approach.

This program allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of the PARE chain through lectures and field work in a wide variety of fields. It also provides opportunities to develop interdisciplinary perspectives and abilities through problem-solving group work in collaboration with students from different countries, cultures and areas of specialization.
