[IMPORTANT] Information Change from 2019 Spring:

Curriculum:

Our new curriculum (2017 Curriculum) will be applied to the exchange students who will enroll in APU from 2019 Spring. Please refer to the new “General Course List” and “List of restricted courses” on the above website. Course contents and subject name in 2017 curriculum differ from the 2011 Curriculum. 

The minimum number of credits students are required to take per semester:

The exchange students who will enroll in APU by 2018 Fall semester are required to take the minimum of 10 credits throughout the semester. However, the exchange students who will enroll in APU in 2019 Spring and after, they are required to take the minimum of 14 credits throughout the entire semester AND weekly class hours must be at least 10 hours.

Course restrictions:

The same as before, exchange students may take any courses from both “College of Asia Pacific Studies” and “College of International Management”. However, some courses as stated in the list are restricted to register depending on the college which the exchange students choose.

Lastly, the course list for 2019 Spring semester is not available at this point. As we stated in our fact sheet, it will be released one month before the semester begins.

[Japan] Kansai University – Intensive Japanese Language and Culture Course (IJLC) Winter 2019

Kansai University (KU), known as one of the leading universities in Japan with old history of 130 years, is a comprehensive private university with 13 undergraduate, 13 graduate programs, and 3 professional graduate schools. There are over 30,000 students enrolled at the university including more than 900 international students. KU campuses are located in Osaka. They are about an hour train ride away from Kyoto, Kobe and Nara. Under the new vision for internationalization entitled “Kansai University Global Initiatives” (GI Vision), KU opened the Bekka “Japanese Language and Culture Program Preparatory
Course” in 2012. This unique course is designed to enhance Japanese language proficiency, media literacy and inter-cultural competency.
Currently, over 100 international students from various countries and regions with large portion of students from Asia are enrolled in the course. They are striving to move on to the next stage of education at Japanese universities at both undergraduate and graduate levels. We are now offering an Intensive Japanese Language and Culture Course (IJLC) in addition to the Preparatory Course (Bekka). IJLC will have sessions in summer and winter. In this IJLC, we provide instruction in Japanese as a second language as well as Japanese culture experiences and field trips (e.g. to Kyoto). Participants will learn Japanese language, and understand Japanese culture and society from various perspectives. Another feature of the IJLC is that the participants will have opportunities to interact with KU Japanese students through a variety of activities. In summary, participants will have opportunities to learn communicative Japanese and truly experience the vibrant cities and people of Western Japan.

Tokyo Tech will host two exciting exchange programs: the YSEP (Young Scientist Exchange Program) for senior/final-year undergraduate students and master’s students, and the ACAP (Academic Cooperation Agreement Program) for both undergraduate (second year or above) and graduate-level students.

Tokyo Tech YSEP (Young Scientist Exchange Program)

YSEP will accept approximately 40 to 50 students in total from Tokyo Tech partner universities which have established a student exchange agreement with our institute. There are 2 types of programs in YSEP: YSEP Focused on Research (YFR, a one-year program) and YSEP for Experiencing Japan (YEJ, a six-month program).

ACAP: Academic Cooperation Agreement Program

Note: In the Department of Architecture and Building Engineering, an academic advisor will be assigned to each applicant after a review of the applicant’s CV and portfolio. Detailed instructions on the submission of these additionally required materials will be given to each relevant applicant after Tokyo Tech has received the official nomination from the applicant’s home university. As for the Nomination of Students, please see below.
In the Department of Innovation Science, an academic advisor will be assigned to each applicant after a review of the applicant’s CV and Study/Research Plan (free format). Detailed instructions on the submission of these additionally required materials will be given to each relevant applicant after Tokyo Tech has received the official nomination from the applicant’s home university. As for the Nomination of Students, please see below.

★For Applicants also applying for a JASSO Scholarship:
There is no particular application form for a JASSO Scholarship. As long as the ACAP application materials for an eligible student have been submitted by the above deadline, the student will automatically be considered for a JASSO Scholarship. For the eligibility requirements, see the “Information about the JASSO Scholarship” reference document found in this packet.

For Applicants also applying for a JASSO Scholarship and who do NOT intend to take any courses during their exchange period: Students not taking courses must be highly motivated and MUST OBTAIN THE CERTIFICATE OF RESEARCH (the proof of achievement with regard to their research projects) at Tokyo Tech by following the necessary procedures at the end of their research period.

Note: Students not taking courses must be aware that if they want to be considered for a scholarship, they will have to obtain this Certificate of Research at Tokyo Tech.

  9. Consent of a Tokyo Tech Professor
    * Please submit evidence that a Tokyo Tech professor has consented to be the applicant’s academic advisor.
  10. Verification Documents of the Applicant’s Financial Status in English (Original)
    * For example, a bank statement (which verifies the exact available balance in the account (at least 80,000 JPY × the number of months the applicant will stay in Japan (e.g. for staying for 6 months: 480,000 JPY)) and the currency unit) for the applicant or the applicant’s financial supporter; or a scholarship certificate (if any).
    * Financial Status Verification is required as part of the application process for the Certificate of Eligibility (COE), which is the documentation used to obtain a visa to study in Japan.
    * If there is not an English version of these documents, please attach a certified English translation with a signature of the translator and the date of translation

[Japan] Kyoto University – AUN-KU Winter Seminar on Human Security Development and Energy Science

“AUN-KU Winter Seminar on Human Security Development and Energy Science” is co-organized by the Graduate School of Energy Science (GSES) of Kyoto University and the ASEAN University Network-Kyoto University Student Mobility Program toward Human Security Development.  It is designed for undergraduate students to study the concept of Human Security Development (HSD) and Energy Science. The main theme of this seminar is energy development, which is an important issue in Human Security Development. The participating students are expected to deepen their knowledge on human security development and energy science with the prospect of finding solutions to technological, socio-economic and political issues in Asia specifically. The seminar will offer lectures and class discussions as well as organize field trips and cultural events. Applicants are not limited to engineering, economics, or science – all fields are welcome.

ELIGIBILITIES

  1. Undergraduate students from AUN member universities
  2. Students in all fields are welcome
  3. The number to be admitted: 20 students (15 with JASSO scholarship eligibility and 5 with non-scholarship)

 

FEE

  1. Participation fee: JPY 10,000 This fee includes field studies, and other necessary expenses during the seminar. All participants should pay this fee in cash in JPY on the first day of the seminar. 
  2. Participants are also required to organise and pay the following costs: 
    • A round-trip flight ticket 
    • Travel expenses between the airport (e.g. Kansai International Airport, Osaka International Airport (Itami)) and Kyoto. 
    • Fees related to visa applications 
    • Travel insurance 
    • Cost of meals
  3. Kyoto University will reserve a hotel for all participants. (Accommodation costs are covered by the programme)
 

SCHOLARSHIP

The 15 applicants as selected by the programme committee will be eligible for a scholarship from JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization). The amount of this scholarship is JPY 80,000 per person (tentative).
