Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is an Indonesian public ivy league research university located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Founded on December 19, 1949, UGM is the oldest and largest institution of higher learning in Indonesia. Located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the 360-acre university comprises of 18 faculties, 2 schools, 287 study programs, 125 joint degrees/double degrees, and 22 research centers. In 2023, UGM has received 2,131 international students from 91 countries, and as of 2024, it has approximately 61,000 students (undergraduate and postgraduate) and 4,000 faculty members, not to mention practitioners and guest lecturers from outside UGM, both domestically and internationally. Universitas Gadjah Mada has been considered to be one of the most prestigious universities in Indonesia, being in the rank #239 of QS 2025.
UGM is implementing an educopolis area, a step taken by universities in creating a conducive environment for the continuity of the learning process. These efforts are pursued in the context of developing multidisciplinary collaborations and responding to ecological issues in order to achieve the vision of the university. Some of the steps are reducing pollution and vehicle exhaust emissions (such as using electrical bus and campus bikes), developing green open spaces on campus, using solar panels, constructing dormitories on the campus, creating parking spaces, planting trees, and many more.
Considered one of the oldest universities in Indonesia, UGM serves as a pillar of educational awakening in Indonesia and purports to be a defender and disseminator of Pancasila. At UGM, students are provided with a vast array of opportunities to develop creativity and innovation in their realms through the support of modern infrastructure and information technology. As a world-class research university, UGM has been paying great attention to research activities by motivating faculty members as well as students to conduct and publish their research.
