Universitas 21 (U21) is a diverse, global network that brings together world-leading, research-intensive universities across six continents, who share a common belief in the value of collaboration and internationalization. From Belgium to Chile, South Korea to South Africa, our member-led initiatives and programmes are designed to benefit staff, students and member institutions, through sharing resources, learning together and co-designing solutions to our common challenges.

We are pleased to inform you that the application for U21 Mid-Career Researcher Programme: Reset, Re-imagine, Reframe is now open.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

  • The U21 Mid-Career Researcher Program is a 4-week online course designed to support mid-career researchers navigating a rapidly changing university landscape. As future academic leaders, MCRs will be equipped, empowered, and connected to face current and emerging challenges with confidence. Delivered in partnership with Common Purpose, the program offers a unique global learning experience that develops personal leadership skills and fosters a creative, collaborative research culture.
  • Duration: 4 weeks (20 February – 19 March 2026)

 

KEY THEMES

  • Week 1: A Lens to View the World – Mindset for Success
  • Week 2: A Deeper Dive into Collaboration and Innovation (Part 1) – Perspective Taking and Influencing Beyond a Remit
  • Week 3: A Deeper Dive into Collaboration and Innovation (Part 2) – Building Consensus and Risk Taking
  • Week 4: Action Planning for Future Development

 

PROGRAM BENEFITS

  • An improved understanding of the skills and mind-set required for driving and working within a more creative and collaborative culture, with real insights from higher education and industry
  • A Global community: deepened multi-disciplinary relationships within a global network, which provide both peer support and challenge and present opportunities for international collaboration
  • A broadened perspective: new ideas, trans-disciplinary approaches and ways of thinking to support MCRs with personal growth and development areas.

 

TIME COMMITMENT

Approximately 2-5 hours per week for four weeks, comprised of:

  • 1 hour live session per week
  • 1-4 hours per week of Individual work (depending on pace and level engagement with resources provided)

ELIGIBILITY

  • It is anticipated that MCRs would be at the level of Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor (or equivalent), from any discipline, who aim to enhance the quality and reach of their research through expanding their global research networks.
  • Be proficient in English

 

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  1. Letter of Recommendation from the Faculty
  2. Curriculum Vitae

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  1. Submit the aforementioned documents to UGM International Exposure Application Form: ugm.id/U21MidCareerResearcher2025 no later than 07 December 2025 for internal review.
  2. OIA staff will evaluate your application. Once you are selected as Nominated Applicants, OIA will confirm your official nomination to Universitas21 and you may proceed to the online application.
  3. The FINAL decision is from Universitas21.

 

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • In the meantime, the students are required to keep the hard file of all documents until further notice by the Office of International Affairs.
  • In case the faculty could not provide the letter of enrollment and nomination during this period, the official nomination through email from the faculty is acceptable. The official nomination could be delivered to head-oia@ugm.ac.id (cc to scholarship@ugm.ac.id)
