Greetings from Japan!

Sophia University, founded in 1913 in Tokyo, is one of Japan’s leading private universities with a strong international reputation. It offers a wide range of programs in the humanities, social sciences, law, economics, natural sciences, and global studies. The university is distinguished by its commitment to academic excellence, global education, and the Jesuit tradition of social responsibility.

We are pleased to inform you that the application for Sophia University, January Session 2026 program is now open for Universitas Gadjah Mada students.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

  • Sophia University offers short-term January and Summer Sessions for students interested in Japan and East Asia. These programs provide a unique chance to explore Japanese language, culture, and society while experiencing Tokyo’s dynamic urban life. Since 1961, the Summer Session has welcomed over 11,000 students worldwide, many of whom have pursued careers related to Japan. The January Session, launched in 2013, also attracts students with courses on contemporary issues and cultural insights.
  • On-site at Yotsuya Campus: 7 – 28 January 2026
  • Off-Campus Study Program: 29 January – 04 February 2026 (Program Informartion)

 

ELIGIBILITY

  • Be a current student or graduate of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree program outside of Japan. Students from high schools or community colleges that do not have the authority to confer degrees equivalent to undergraduate level degrees in Japan are not eligible for this program.
  • Submit ALL required documents to apply for the session by the designated application deadline. Late applications will not be accepted.
  • The minimum academic requirement is GPA 2.8 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent.

 

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • Official Academic Transcript and a Grading Scale from the applicant’s home institution
  • Passport Copy
  • Color Headshot Photo (taken within the last 3 months)
  • English Proficiency Test Score

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  1. Apply directly to Sophia University. Kindly refer to Application Guide Website.
  2. The deadline is 15 October 2025 (17.00 JST).
  3. The FINAL decision is from Sophia University.

 

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • The program will be cancelled when we have fewer than 30 participants.
  • If the number of applicants exceeds the capacity, we will conduct an additional selection screening among the applications. In order to maintain diversity of participants, number of participants from one university may be limited. Please understand there is a possibility that one cannot participate even when meeting the criteria.
