Asian Studies

July 24 - August 14, 2015

Since its foundation in 1961, Sophia University Summer Session in Asian Studies has provided the participants with the opportunity to study about Japan and explore the country’s relation to Asia and the rest of the world. By studying at Yotsuya campus in the heart of Tokyo, the students experience various aspects of Japanese culture and society, and witness the myriad ways in which all cultures of the world are reflected in the maze-like urban landscape of Tokyo.

The Summer Session also enables participants to experience a number of different perspectives on Japan. The faculty themselves have diverse cultural backgrounds, and while some students from Sophia’s Faculty of Liberal Arts attend the session, the majority of participants come from a variety of different countries. The summer session thus offers a rare opportunity for Japanese students and non-Japanese students from abroad to gather to study, discuss, and reflect on Japan’s role in the world. Over 11,000 students from around the globe have attended the Summer Session over the years, and many have gone on to pursue exciting careers related to Japan.

In addition to the courses offered on-campus, we have offered field trips and events such as visiting Meiji Shrine, viewing Rakugo, Kabuki and Noh plays, experiencing tea ceremony and ikebana, and attending a wadaiko lesson. Three to four field trips/events are offered every year. Also some classes feature field trips directly related to the course content.
Taking advantage of the central location in Tokyo, Sophia’s Summer Session students are able to not only study about Japan, but also directly experience topics and issues raised in the classes as when possible, the courses introduce students to the matters they can actually see and experience in the city. Participants earn three credits on successful completion of each course (up to six credits).
