1.Japan in Today’s World (JTW)
JTW gives you the opportunity to experience life and study at a major Japanese university without requiring proficiency in the Japanese language. We provide an integrated, multi-disciplinary program with flexibility of choice across a broad range of academic courses. No matter what your special field or level in Japanese, you can choose a portfolio of study suited to your needs. You can also stay for the full year or just one semester.
Eligibility:
- Minimum in 1st year Undergraduate Student (S1) of Universitas Gadjah Mada *POST GRADUATE can Apply
- Certificate of enrollment from faculty
- Letters of recommendation
- Curriculum Vitae
- Motivation Letter
- A completed JTW Application Form
- An 800-word essay on “Why JTW is for me”
- An independent study project proposal (if you plan to do a project)
- An advanced laboratory research proposal (if you are choosing this option)
- Your official academic transcript(s)
- A copy of your most recent TOEFL or IELTS score report
Course which are not open to exchange student:
- Practical Courses such as Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dental Sciences
- Professional courses like Business School and Law School are not open to JLCC and JTW students.

2. Japanese Language and Culture Course (JLCC)
Japanese Language and Culture Course is provided by the International Student Center at Kyushu University and it is organized for those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of Japanese society and culture with further opportunities to improve Japanese language skills for conducting research in the area of Japanese studies.
The students in this course are required to complete classes such as ‘Advanced Japanese’, ‘Survey of Japanese Language and Culture’ , ‘Understanding Japanese’ and ‘Exercises in Modern Japanese’ offered in the International Student Center. They are also required to take at least four credits from electives which best suit their academic interests and Japanese proficiency levels. These elective classes are offered by undergraduate schools including Literature, Economics, and Law as well as General Education at Kyushu University.
JLCC students can choose between “Thesis Writing” and “Survey Analysis” classes. These classes involves research under the guidance of a faculty supervisor on Japanese topics of academic interest the student selects. Moreover, various kinds of Japanese classes (writing, speaking, kanji vocabulary, reading etc.), offered by International Student Center, are available.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must fulfill both of the following conditions:
- be registered as undergraduates and majoring in Japanese studies at UGM. ( first year students may not participate.)
- have completed basic Japanese language courses and be ready to take classes offered in Japanese at Kyushu University. Candidates preferably will have passed Level N1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test or possess the equivalent proficiency in Japanese language.
*N2 or Level 2 would be Accepted
