We are very pleased to announce that UTokyo will continue to provide hands-on laboratory experience to undergraduate students through the Amgen Scholars Program in 2019 as one of the host universities of Amgen Scholars Asia Program (https://amgenscholars.com/asia-program).

The objective of the program is to provide undergraduate students from different countries, including Japan, who are committed to or who are considering a career in biology or related sciences and planning to continue to graduate studies, with eight weeks (from June 11 to August 5, 2019) of biomedical research experience in the basic and translational sciences. Opportunities for the students to gain valuable hands-on experience in research will be provided by 15 research laboratories in five of the graduate schools and research institutes of UTokyo (Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Institute of Industrial Science).

Additionally, there will be opportunities for the students to take part in events, such as Japanese language classes, Japanese cultural events, exchange events with UTokyo students, etc., organized to maximize their experience as Amgen Scholars at UTokyo.

Each Amgen Scholars will receive a stipend to cover their return travel and living expenses, in addition to paid accommodation, during the program.

ELIGIBILITY

– Enrolled in colleges or universities worldwide that award a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent); and
– At the minimum, have completed their first year of undergraduate study at the time the summer program begins, and
– Are not graduating before the summer program begins, and after the summer program ends will resume undergraduate studies for at least 1 semester or 1 quarter after the end of the summer program.
– Have a strong record of academic performance; and
– Have good working knowledge of English, demonstrated by a minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 72, IELTS overall band score of 5.5, Cambridge English FCE, TOEIC score of 1095, TOEIC L&R score of 785, or TOEIC S&W score of 310, if not a native English speaker or English is not your first language, and
– Have an interest in pursuing a Ph.D.

• Motivation Letter
• Certificate of Enrollment from faculty
• Official academic transcript
• Letter of Reference (two (2) reference letter from different people, one of who must be a faculty member currently involved in teaching one of the courses you are taking)
• Colored copy of passport
• Passport-size photo (4 pieces, 3.5 x 4.5 cm, white background color, taken within the past three months)
• Letter of Nomination from faculty (*addressed to Head of Office of International Affairs)
• English language proficiency min. TOEFL (iBT) score of 72, IELTS overall band score of 5.5, Cambridge English FCE, TOEIC score of 1095, TOEIC L&R score of 785, or TOEIC S&W score of 310

Application for the program is now open online and will close at 3:00 PM on February 1, 2019 (Japan Standard Time).

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

1) Submit the aforementioned documents to Office of International Affairs, UGM (Bulaksumur F-12) for internal review.
2) OIA staffs will evaluate your application.
3) Once you are selected as Nominated Student, you may continue your online application to University of Tokyo as for host university selection.
4) FINAL decision from University of Tokyo.

Please send all documents above in 1 Hardcopy to Office of International Affairs, UGM (Bulaksumur Block F-12) and 1 Softcopy in one PDF file to email: scholarship@ugm.ac.id. no later than January 28, 2019.
