Greetings from Japan!

The Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS) at The University of Tokyo, established in 1998, is dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research and education. It integrates knowledge from the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and environmental studies to address complex global challenges. The school offers innovative graduate programs that emphasize creativity, problem-solving, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. With a strong international orientation, GSFS engages in partnerships and joint research with leading institutions worldwide. It continues to contribute to pioneering scientific advancements and sustainable solutions for society.

We are pleased to inform you that the application for GSFS UTSIP Kashiwa is now open for Universitas Gadjah Mada students.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

  • UTSIP Kashiwa, initiated by the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences in 2013, provides a hands-on research internship program in the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Information Technology, International Studies, Materials Sciences, Advanced Energy, Ocean Science, Physics and Sustainability Science Studies.
  • Program Dates: May 25, 2026 – July 10, 2026 (47 day)
  • Participation Fee: 70,000 JPY

 

PROGRAM BENEFITS 

  • provides hands-on research internship opportunities in the fields of natural sciences and social sciences.
  • offers lectures from world-leading researchers at GSFS.
  • is a seven-week summer program for academically motivated undergraduate students.
  • provides a scholarship and accommodations.

 

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

UTokyo provides a UTSIP scholarship and accommodation to participants.

UTSIP scholarship amount JPY 130,000

If you have applied or will apply for a different scholarship, please mention this on the Application page. Some past UTSIP participants received a stipend from the following organizations.

  • Friends of UTokyo, Inc. (FUTI)
  • MIT-Japan program
  • Honda Foundation
  • UCLA Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies

 

ELIGIBILITY

  • Participants must be in their undergraduate program at an overseas college or university throughout the entire duration of UTSIP program, and will not have completed their bachelor’s (equivalent level) degree program.
  • Participants who are considering matriculating to graduate level study at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences or other graduate schools at The University of Tokyo, or elsewhere in Japan
  • Participants are required to participate in all activities including classes, laboratory work, and special events organized by UTSIP.

  2. The deadline is 13 January 2026 at 17:00 Japan time
  3. The FINAL decision is from GSFS.
