Mobility grant for research stay at ULg for non-European PhD candidate
Number of scholarships, duration and home institutions: see table in annex I
Amount Monthly allowance of 800 EUR
Fixed amount for participation in one round trip, according to the distance between the home institution and the University of Liege.
Period of stay: between July 1st 2016 and July 31st 2018
- Objectives:
The European Commission grants mobility scholarships for non-European PhD students, for a stay at ULg. This aims at:
- Improving the student’s skills, contributing to his/her personal development and assuring a better employability.
- Stimulating the conscience and understanding of other cultures and countries, by giving the participants the opportunity to develop international networks.
- Improving the language skills in a significant way.
- Eligibility to the grant:
These scholarships are granted in the frame of doctorate thesis developed abroad, to candidates registered in doctorate studies abroad, in one of the institutions listed in the annex I of this call. They are not supposed to be used for stays at the stage of finalizing the thesis.
The stay at ULg must be an international mobility window for the student. At the end of this stay, he must go back to his/her home institution to go on with his/her research.
Candidates who benefit or benefited from scholarship/contract in the frame of Erasmus Mundus Doctorate, Marie Curie, Averroes, are not eligible to this grant.
The allocation of a grant is only possible for candidates coming from a partner institution listed in annex I. This list is exhaustive and no transfer towards another institution or country is allowed. The student must be registered by one of the institutions listed.
- Duration:
The scholarship is granted for a total number of months between 6 and 12, according to the budget allocated to each country (see annex I). The stay must begin on July 1st 2016 at the earliest. The stay must end at the latest on July 31st 2018.
- Amount:
Allowance of 800 euros per month (30 days) of actual presence at ULg, with participation to one round trip, calculated according to the distance between ULg and the home institution:

- Application process:
5.1. How to apply ?
The application file must be submitted by the student, with the adequate form.
It must be written entirely in French or entirely in English, and refer to one of the home institutions listed in the annex I to this call.

The application file must be sent by e-mail to the International Relations Office (anne-laure.villeminot@ulg.ac.be). The file must be complete (form and annexes) and all must be submitted together. If it is not, it will be considered as not eligible for assessment.
5.2. Assessment and selection
The projects will be assessed by an adequate committee.
Assessment criteria:
- Candidate’s quality: academic career, state of progress of the thesis, curriculum vitae (1/3 of final grade).
- Quality of the mobility project, its structure, its program and its fitting into the doctorate (1/3 of final grade).
- Quality of welcoming structure (availability of requested resources) and added value brought by the welcoming structure to the student (1/3 of final grade).
At the end of the assessment process, the applications will be sorted into three categories: priority (excellent, submitted for financing), registered on waiting list, and dismissed. In the priority category, applications will be ranked.
Selection criteria:
The applications in the priority category will be dealt with by the ULg’s Scientific Missions Committee which will allocate the scholarships according to the available budget (see table in annex I) and following issues:
- Respect for minorities
- Gender balance
- Exclusion of applications which obtained below half the maximum for one of the grades.
Selected candidates will be informed by e-mail within 4 weeks of application. These ones will have to acknowledge the decision within 14 calendar days. The candidate who would not respect this would be considered as turning down the scholarship.
- Departure to ULg:
As previously mentioned, the period of stay must begin on July 1st 2016 at the earliest and on August 1st 2017 (for 12 months grants) or February 1st 2018 (for 6 months grants), at the latest.
The selected candidate will be responsible for all due formalities to get a visa and residence permit for Belgium, with support of the ULg’s Euraxess Center for Mobility services. He/she will subscribe all insurances for his/her stay: travel insurance (including damage or loss of luggage), civil liability, accident and severe illnesses (including temporary or permanent disability), healthcare, death (including repatriation).
The student will have to sign a grant agreement, a learning agreement and to respect the Erasmus+ student charter that he/she will receive. He/she will also have to make a report at the end of his/her mobility, within 15 days after he/she has received an invitation to do so by e-mail.
The scholarship covers research period in Belgium. It is not a salary, and is not subject to social security deduction. The allowance will be transferred in three installments, onto a Belgian bank account, according to the real duration of the stay at ULg.
If the candidate considers, with his/her promoter, to modify the dates of stay, he/she will have to ask the administration to check if it is possible.
- Cancellation of the grant:
In case of disrespect for the conditions of the grant allocation, this one will immediately be cancelled.
