[Japan] ASEAN – Japan Medical Scholarship Program 2026

Greeting from Japan!

A fully funded scholarship for undergraduate medical students from ASEAN Member States. Sponsored by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), the programme provides the opportunity to study at Japanese medical schools, empowering future healthcare leaders to advance medical standards and strengthen regional collaboration across ASEAN and Japan.

Eligibility

  • Category A
    1. First- or second-year undergraduate medical students enrolled in faculties of medicine at ASEAN universities that have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ERIA.
    2. Selection process will be conducted in English only.
  • Category B
    1. First- or second-year undergraduate medical students enrolled in faculties of medicine at ASEAN universities.
    2. Open only to female students.
    3. Applicants must complete the selection process in both English and Japanese and possess one of the following Japanese language qualifications:
      • Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1 or N2, or
      • Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) with at least 200 points in the Japanese section.

Field of Study

Medicine

The scholarship enables students to undertake undergraduate medical education at selected Japanese medical schools, followed by two years of paid initial clinical training in Japan.

Host Institutions

  1. Category A: International University of Health and Welfare, Japan
  2. Category B: Tokyo Women’s Medical University, Japan (for female students only)

Scholarship Coverage

The scholarship is fully funded and covers:

  1. Tuition and admission fees
  2. Living expenses (up to ¥120,000 per month, including dormitory fees, meal allowance, and health insurance premium)
  3. Return airfare between the home country and Japan
  4. Textbooks
  5. Japanese language programme (where applicable)

Award Period

The scholarship supports:

  1. Six (6) years of undergraduate medical studies in Japan, followed by
  2. Two (2) years of paid initial clinical training.

Required Documents

Applicants are required to submit:

  1. Completed application form
  2. Official high school academic transcript
  3. Official first-year undergraduate academic transcript (if applicable)
  4. Certified English translations of transcripts (if the originals are not in English)
  5. Essay (maximum 1,000 words) explaining:
    • Purpose of studying in Japan
    • Knowledge of the healthcare system in the applicant’s country
    • Expected contribution as a future medical doctor
    • Academic achievements, leadership, and teamwork experience
    • Study plan and future career goals
  6. One recommendation letter from the faculty of the applicant’s university
  7. English proficiency certificate (optional)
  8. Japanese language proficiency certificate (required for Category B; optional for Category A)

Application Procedure

  1. Complete the official application form.
  2. Prepare all required supporting documents.
  3. Submit the aforementioned documents to UGM International Exposure Application Form: http://ugm.id/IntExposureApplication no later than 15 August 2026 for internal review.
